Some of you may remember seeing George and his friends on the tv show Theodore Tugboat, who live and work in the Big Harbour.

Over the years, we’ve been home to quite a few ship cats, but none stole our hearts quite like Erik the Red. This beloved orange kitty served as our rodent patrol officer, roaming the waterfront and making his home aboard CSS Acadia.
Visitors and staff alike often spotted Erik perched on a nearby bench, keeping watch over the harbour. Though Erik is no longer with us, his memory remains an important part of our story.
To honour his legacy, we’ve recently installed a statue on the bench near Boat School and CSS Acadia, ensuring that Erik can continue to welcome visitors for years to come. 🧡 We welcome you to share your memories of Erik in the comments below.

In honour of we have the collar of Ralph, the dog who reportedly belonged to Captain Haakon From of the vessel Imo, which was involved with the Halifax Explosion.

Captain From was killed after their ship hit the munitions ship Mont-Blanc and triggered the 1917 explosion.

Ralph survived the blast however, it is unknown what happened to him in the immediate aftermath.

You can see more of Ralph’s collar via our Nova Scotia Museum collections page.
