Every mask tells a story. Every story carries a teaching. 🪵

In Clay Mask Medicine, youth from Eskasoni First Nation explore identity, knowledge, and connection through the art of mask-making. Guided by artists Nancy Oakley and Gordon Sparks, participants drew on traditional teachings, creative expression, and community knowledge to bring each work to life.

As we mark National Indigenous History Month, we invite you to spend time with these powerful creations and the stories, relationships, and teachings they carry.

📍 On view now at the AGNS until December 31, 2026.

Ever wondered how a work this massive actually makes it onto a wall? 👀

To date, Miss Chief’s Wet Dream is the biggest artwork in our collection, and it definitely does not “just hang up” like a picture frame!

From unrolling and stretching the canvas to the final heavy lift, here’s a rare behind-the-scenes look at the incredible effort it took to bring Miss Chief back home in the exhibition Kent Monkman: Breaking Waves.

See the finished result, now on view at the AGNS! 🌊

She’s back! Miss Chief Eagle Testickle returns in Kent Monkman: Breaking Waves, now open at the AGNS. ✨

More than just the artist’s alter ego, Miss Chief appears throughout the exhibition as a time-travelling, shape-shifting guide who invites us to look at history through a different lens. Through her presence, Kent Monkman uses wit and grand-scale storytelling to challenge traditional narratives and centre Indigenous perspectives.

Step into a world where water emerges as both the subject and storyteller, and where art becomes a powerful tool for reimagining our past and inspiring our future.

Plan your visit to the Gallery today to experience it in person. 🌊

Long cherished as one of Nova Scotia’s earliest signs of spring, the Mayflower became a symbol of resilience, renewal, and the changing season. 🌸🌿

From a scrapbook of 60 watercolour illustrations accompanied by Maria Morris Miller’s handwritten notes, she describes the Mayflower as growing “in turfy soil, in woods, and on heathy grounds among small shrubs. Its delicate tints and delicious perfume make it a general favourite. Its name is connected with a custom of repairing to the woods in ‘May morning,’ for the purpose of gathering early specimens of this earliest of Nova Scotia ‘Wild Flowers.’”

🌷 Explore Miller’s beautiful floral works in From One to Many Natures at the AGNS. We’re open 10am-5pm today (Victoria Day).
