Garnet McPhail began carving in 1978, and his creations are now preserved in institutions like the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Pieces like this show exactly why his vision continues to captivate art lovers everywhere.This early owl carving is a beautiful example of his skill. The detailed chip carving perfectly mimics the texture of real feathers, while the clear lacquer coating has aged over time to a wonderful golden patina. The Love Boats (2025) by Leo Naugler
Hailing from Camperdown, Nova Scotia, Leo is a legendary figure in Canadian folk art. Alongside his brothers Bradford and Ransford, the Naugler name is synonymous with the joyful, storytelling spirit of East Coast folk tradition. Before being recognized for his signature carvings and paintings, Leo spent years working as a highway laborer and at a small automobile body shop.
What makes this particular piece so spectacular is Leo’s incredible grasp of the power of color choices. Look at how that electric, sky-blue water instantly pops against the deep forest greens and the stark white of the mountain peaks. He does not just stop at the edge of the board, either. Leo treats the hand-painted, heavily speckled bright yellow frame as a structural extension of the artwork itself, completely pulling you into his vibrant, stylized vision of Maritime life.

This incredible Walking Fish by folk artist Barry Colpitts has been following me all around the house lately, so we decided it was time for a special road trip back to where it all began. Barry was absolutely amazed to see it in such pristine condition, especially since he created it over 20 years ago! The craftsmanship is just brilliant. The entire body and legs are carved from a single piece of wood, using the natural branches for perfect leg placement. Barry even pointed out the history hidden in the details: the teeth are square-headed nails saved from an old wall he replaced in his house, and the eyes are classic bottle caps. Treasures like this only get better with time.

This striking black crow perfectly captures his raw, unpolished whittling style of Charlie Atkinson. Mounted on simple wooden dowels instead of a floating decoy base, it was carved strictly as a piece of self-taught art meant to sit proudly on a living room mantel.
Atkinson’s distinctive work earned him lasting institutional acclaim when his carvings were selected for the landmark 1976 travelling exhibition, "Folk Art of Nova Scotia," organized by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (). Gerald Croft (1935–2022) was a mechanic and owned his own garage for many years. In his free time he liked to keep busy, so he took up woodworking as a hobby. He carved birds and small animals, including the dove we have at the gallery, which shows the careful detail he put into the wing and the smooth finish he liked to achieve. He displayed his carvings in a small “museum” he built in his backyard. Although initially reluctant to sell his work, he did part with a few pieces occasionally.

A quiet corner of the gallery holds Gael Ryan’s elaborately decorated desk. She was a New Brunswick artist who painted her own interiors and trimmed them with mussel shells, creating a world that was as much environment as artwork. Beside it stands Bradford Naugler’s contemplative figure with oversized feet grounding him. Above, Donald Boudreau’s pheasant perches with full colour and authority.
