Meet the sweetest pair to stroll out of the 1950s and straight onto a Stiles-green base. He’s buttoned up in his Sunday-best yellow jacket; she’s sporting her patterned blouse and skirt like she’s headed to the church supper. Together they’ve got that unmistakable Ben Stiles charm — bright faces, tidy lines, and a kind of everyday dignity that makes his figures feel like neighbours you’ve known forever.

There’s a whole story tucked into their stance: a couple who’s weathered a few decades of small-town routines, still standing shoulder to shoulder. Stiles had a knack for that — capturing ordinary Maritime folks with a tenderness that sneaks up on you.

A lovely little duo from New Brunswick’s folk tradition, ready to win over anyone who stops long enough to look.

Elmer Killen often returned to the musicians of his community throughout his carving career, capturing them with affection and unmistakable Maritime character. Many are shown grey-haired and seated on ordinary kitchen chairs, reminding us that the heart of the music was never on a stage, but in the warmth of a kitchen party—among neighbours, friends, good seafood, a little rum, and the kind of laughter and storytelling that can carry a Saturday night well past midnight.
This gentleman is completely lost in the music—you can almost hear the tune rising off the carving. And those pointed black-and-white oxfords! The kind of two-tone lace-up Sunday best that instantly places him in another era, adding just the right note of style to a figure already full of rhythm, memory, and life. Can you hear the music too?

Step right up and meet the smallest man on the midway with the biggest opinion, a 7½ inch firecracker carved by Ben Stiles himself. Look at this fella: red jacket, cigar clamped tight, eyes wide like he’s sizing up the whole gallery and deciding whether we’re worth his time.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m the boss around here,” he seems to mutter. “You wanna see the good stuff, you talk to me first. I know every carving in this joint, see?”
He’s pure Stiles, bold colour, bright expression, and that unmistakable mix of mischief and Maritime charm. The kind of character who looks like he’s been running a back alley card game behind the ferris wheel since 1953 and hasn’t lost a hand yet.

DRINK MILK FOR HEALTH!
Who is this sweet lady that looks like my grandma milking that cow?
Garfield Campbell had a way of making you part of his carvings. I know I am waiting for her to spray some of that fresh milk my way!
Garfield’s wife Verbena did a wonderful job dressing up this lovely cow maid in paint.

Ben Stiles had a gift for capturing the small, proud moments of Maritime life and this Scout is one of those perfect examples. Upright, bright eyed, and painted in Stiles’ unmistakable greens and golds, he feels like a snapshot of a whole era: church basements, jamborees, Saturday chores, and the quiet confidence of growing up in rural New Brunswick.
There’s a tenderness in Stiles’ figures, a belief that ordinary people, in their everyday uniforms, were worth carving into memory. This little fellow carries that whole tradition in his stance.

Who is this lovely little mermaid?
Standing just 14 inches high, she may be tiny, but she’s serving major sea siren energy. Cape Breton folk art legend Sid Howard knew exactly how to make us fall hard for his wonderfully quirky creations. Those goggly eyes? Iconic. The bold red details? Unforgettable!

Meet Robert Danielis: after 25 years calling Prince Edward County home and creating magic as artist in residence at the historic Waring House, he decided it was time for a new adventure. His motto? “If you’re going to play at folk art, you have to play with the big boys!” Off to Nova Scotia he went, diving headfirst into the vibrant world of folk art. His playful spirit shines through in masterpieces like “The Big Top”—a perfect reminder that creating art is all about having fun!
