What an incredible day here at the Tashme Museum!

Today, we had the privilege of welcoming 36 educators from School District 78 for an “Introduction to the Internment history & Tashme.”

The educators enjoyed a personalized tour of the museum and took part in several activities designed to help them explore, engage with, and better understand this vast and important part of our history.

We here at the Tashme Museum are incredibly grateful for our new space, which now allows us to welcome and host larger groups and gatherings like this.

It was wonderful to see so many educators taking the time to learn, ask questions, engage, and connect with the history of Tashme.
We’re excited about the opportunity to continue working with teachers and schools to help ensure these stories are remembered, understood, and carried forward to future generations.

Yesterday, members of the Tashme Museum team had the opportunity to visit the recently unveiled monument at the Japanese Canadian Hastings Park Interpretive Centre.
Nearly 8,000 names have been meticulously laser-cut into steel beams, these names represent the Japanese Canadian community who were forcibly removed from their homes throughout 1942 and confined to the horrific living conditions of the animal livestock buildings at Hastings Park. These facilities served as detention centres while the numerous internment sites, including Tashme, were being constructed.

While the interior of the Interpretive Centre is still under construction and features only temporary displays and conceptual illustrations, the exterior monuments are now open to the public.

We encourage you to take some time to visit this truly significant site and reflect on this history, which is long overdue to be shared and remembered.

The Tashme Historical Society, and myself personally, can’t thank the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society (JCLS) enough for their unwavering support.

Thanks to the JCLS’s advocacy and belief in our vision, the museum has become what I always imagined it could be, even when I wasn’t sure how we would ever achieve it.

Another great weekend here at the Tashme Museum!

Nearly 150 visitors joined us over the weekend, including 36 guests who travelled all the way from Vancouver as part of the inaugural ParkBus tours to the museum.

We’re thrilled to be a partner in this exciting new program with Hope, Cascades & Canyons, helping connect even more people with the history, stories, and the community who once called Tashme home.

Next scheduled tour is August 30th.

What an incredible weekend here at the museum and for the Tashme Museum team.

We’ve broken down the weekend into two highlights:

On Sunday, members of the Tashme Museum team walked on an early ferry to Mayne Island to celebrate the restoration of the Japanese Memorial Garden and the grand-opening of the 'Mayne was Home' exhibit, now open at the historic 1896 Mayne Island Museum.

Attending this opening was a truly special occasion for our team, as one of our own society directors and museum hosts, Lisa, has direct family connections to the Konishi family of Mayne Island.

Congratulations to the Mayne Island Agricultural Society and the Mayne Island Historical Society for all of the hard work on this spectacular project.

It was such a privilege to be part of these celebrations and we encourage everyone to visit both the beautiful Japanese Memorial Garden and the Mayne Island Museum whenever you are in the area.

Part 1: On Saturday, we had the pleasure of welcoming 30 members of the Shikaze family from Toronto. The Shikaze family spent a few hours with our team for a hosted viewing and walking tour of the valley. It was truly a privilege to share these stories and connect with such a wonderful Tashme family.

Another great and busy weekend here at the museum!

We were excited to welcome Shosei, Eito and Sana, who travelled all the way from Mio, (Wakayama) Japan, who are studying the immigrant history connecting Mio and Canada, particularly the Japanese Canadian community in Steveston.

Their visit was especially meaningful to me. I had the opportunity to visit the fascinating Mio-Canada Museum this past March, so it was wonderful to now welcome visitors from Mio here at the Tashme Museum.
We were also treated to a delicious bento lunch. 😋
