H A P P Y P R I D E

Pride week is in full swing 🏳️‍🌈 in Kelowna. This year's theme "Community is Our Power" is such a vibe. We love it. ❤️

The amazing intergalactic branding for Kelowna Pride this year by Cyan Bold Design is gorgeous.

We're sharing this mixed media drawing by artist Charlotte-Ann Brown (b. Moncton, NB: 1929-2019) from our Permanent Collection. The colour and vibrancy of this landscape is reflective of just how diverse and beautiful our 2SLGBTQIA+ community is.

Together.
Always.

Follow Kelowna Pride for a list of all of the events you won’t want to miss this week.

Meet Kirsteen 👋

As Public Programs and Engagement Manager, Kirsteen McCulloch shapes our school tour program, art classes, art events, Family Sundays, and other cool opportunities to connect with artists (like the ones coming up on June 13).

Kirsteen's upbringing was steeped in art, debate, and conversation. She studied Art History and English Literature at UBC. An unexpected detour into business and technology shaped much of her career in Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa. Returning to the Okanagan, she led the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan for the past six years.

A placemaker and dreamer at heart, Kirsteen meditates on ideas and laughs at her own jokes. Outside the Gallery, you'll find her on the lakeshore or the trails of Knox Mountain with Duncan, a Westie with strong opinions and excellent comedic timing.

Join us in making Kirsteen feel welcome ❤️

The season of "The Tree Planters" winds down.

Final weekend.

Rita Leistner's portraits of tree planters captured in real-time amongst the chaotic aftermath of clear-cuts and wildfires are mesmerizing.

The Canadian photographer and filmmaker who spent a decade working as a tree planter, now points her lens at the people on the ground who continue this work.

See them this weekend.

🎟️ Half Price Admission (Just $5) until May 31

'The Tree Planters' is organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and curated by John Geoghegan.

With the Memorial Cup in town, we’re highlighting a connection between sport, nature, and contemporary art.

"The Helmet" (2000) by artist Aganetha Dyck is at the epicenter of this three-way collision of worlds.

Aganetha Dyck (1937–2025) was a celebrated Canadian artist known for her extraordinary collaborations with honeybees. She introduced everyday objects into beehives (this time a hockey helmet), allowing the bees to gradually transform them through wax and comb.

The results are beautiful and speak to ideas of protection, fragility, and the unexpected relationships between human-made objects and natural systems.

Tarralik Duffy makes art that looks familiar but hits different.

"Sugar Rush" opens this weekend (May 30).

It presents the Inuk multidisciplinary artist's oversized soft sculptures and digital drawings that explore Inuit identity, memory, and contemporary life in northern communities.

Visitors will see towering textile pop cans (Kuuka-Kuula), red leather jerry cans sewn with the word DANGER, and digital prints, such as her viral image Blubberlicious, a retro bubblegum wrapper advertising "NEW! juicy flesh flavour."

See it first.

Save the Date: Opening Reception | Friday, June 12, 6 to 8 pm

FINAL DAYS. Floor Opener closes May 31.

“Global warming is a way for me to paint what I see or what I feel from memory. What has happened to our forests?” — Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun

This is what it looks like when an artist refuses to look away. You cannot feel the vibration of these paintings on a screen. You have to be in the room.

This is your last chance…

14 lucky winners joined us last night for an exclusive art experience.

The contest was promoted though our friends at "Heard About Harold." Recipients joined us for a private tour of "Floor Opener" and "The Tree Planters."

Afterwards, we revealed all of our secrets with a behind-the-scenes look at our art vault and through the maze of corridors and rooms that help us to stage the exhibitions that audiences see here.

Lastly, we sat down to Bannock and refreshments courtesy of Kekuli Cafe and a discussion of what we saw, how we felt, and what stuck with us.

Sound like something, you'd like to do here?
Let us know. We're listening.

TIP: 📌 Haven't heard about Harold? You need to add this friendly little quail to your inbox and get the weekly round up of all things arts & culture
