We owe a HUGE thank you to Acapella Window Cleaning for shining up our Visitor Centre windows so beautifully. They have all the tools and know-how to get into those hard-to-reach places. And when it came time to settle up the bill, they announced they would do if for free as a service to the community. Top notch people they are. We are so grateful. Thank you thank you thank you 🄹 šŸ™

Are you interested in learning new (old) skills, making friends and becoming more involved in your community?
If so, volunteering at the Grist Mill and Gardens in Keremeos might be a great fit for you!
We have an amazing, talented, well-organized, knowledgeable, fun, hard-working (I could go on and on) group of volunteers and they would love to welcome some fresh faces into the fold.
We have all sorts of projects to suit a variety of skill sets, availability and interests.
If you would like to volunteer regularly, you may consider:
- Baking traditional goodies on a wood burning stove at our outdoor summer kitchen
- Tending to our little organic kitchen garden planted with heirloom seeds
- Learning and sharing tried, tested and true homesteading skills such as candle dipping, sewing and braiding rugs, or
- Raising and tending to a heritage breed chicken flock
We are also looking for some help with one-off projects such as:
- Bucking up wood (so.much.deadfall)
- Helping us repair and expand our irrigation system
- Building a fence in the visitor parking lot
- Pruning our beautiful, heritage apple trees
- Fixing up the old chicken coop, or
- Building a garden arbour
Please reach out if you’d like to get involved! One-offs and regular commitments are all welcome.

Hello! I’m Jess, the new General Manager.

To say I’m passionate about the Grist Mill would be a pretty big understatement.

One of the first things I did when we moved to Keremeos 5 years ago (in the midst of renovations, establishing Riverbank Acres and settling our family into a new home and town) was ask to volunteer with the Summer Kitchen ladies here at the Grist Mill. They welcomed me warmly and I’ve remained actively involved at the site ever since.

For as long as I’ve lived in the Similkameen Valley, this place has provided a peaceful respite from the busyness of modern day life… a space where I could disconnect from the outside world’s troubles and connect with the past instead.

As the new steward of the site, my goal is to ensure this remains a place where people can come to learn about and experience a simpler way of life, for generations to come.

I have much more to say about plans for the future but that can wait for another day.

As my journey begins at the helm of our beloved historic site, I am feeling deep gratitude for who and what came before me.

Thank you Chris for the years of work, fun and enthusiasm you gave to this site. You helped shape its modern story. The lessons and teachings from your time at the Grist Mill have reached far and wide. When you are off on your next grand adventure, many of us will think of you and remember we are kinder, a little more curious and a lot better for having come to know you.

Thank you to the Grist Mill Operations Society for taking a chance on me. Your work behind the scenes to establish firm foundations and secure provincial funding will enable our Mill and historic site to continue to operate, grow and flourish. Thank you for staying the course through this transition.

Thank you to the volunteers and the Grist Mill Foundation for showing up and doing the dirty work. Since February, you have put in more than 700 volunteer hours cleaning, hauling, decorating and organizing to create a peaceful, clean, beautiful tea room ready to welcome our visitors, both old and new. I couldn’t be more grateful for your friendship, efforts, baking, laughter and gumption. What a group of women!

Thank you to the 2025 staff and team: Dani, Tyne, Lorna, Celia, Colin, Zanny, the summer students and Cuyler… your work, ideas, passion and presence made the site come alive! You are much appreciated by so many, including myself.

And last but not least, thank you to everyone who has taken the time to say congratulations, send a kind text, or or simply shown up to help out on site as I set out in this new role. Your support and enthusiasm mean more than you can know.

Stay tuned to find out more about what’s going on behind the doors as we prepare to open in May!

Over the past few months, there have been a number of changes at the Grist Mill, and we know many of you have been following along with interest and care.

As part of this transition, the site is now under the day-to-day leadership of a new General Manager. We’re grateful to everyone who continues to support the Mill during this period of change, and to the staff, volunteers, and community members who help bring the site to life each day.

We also want to take a moment to acknowledge Chris Mathieson, who led the Grist Mill for the past twelve years. During that time, the Mill grew not only as a place, but as a community—something that is especially visible here, where this page has become one of the most active and engaged online spaces in the Similkameen.

We’ve invited Chris to share a few words:

—

I won’t take up much space, but I did want to say thank you.

Twelve years at the Grist Mill was a meaningful chapter of my life, shaped as much by the people around it as by the work itself. What we built together—especially the sense of community that exists both on-site and here—was something special.

I also want to acknowledge the staff, volunteers, and others who continue to show up and support the place with real care and effort. The Grist Mill has always depended on people like that, and it always will.

Transitions are never simple, but places like the Grist Mill endure because people continue to care for them. My hope is that the support this community has always shown will carry forward to those now leading the site.

As for me, I’ll be sharing a bit more about what’s next for me in the weeks ahead. If you’d like to stay in touch, you can find me here on Facebook or at www.cogno.ca.

Thank you for being part of the story.

— Chris
