Casa Casa is the home for the arts in southern Alberta. It is about experimentation, incubation, learning and growing.

This page is managed by the Allied Arts Council and is intended to be a source to find information on Casa, Lethbridge's community arts centre located just east of Galt Gardens. Casa is the realization of a 20 year dream, shared by many in the Lethbridge arts community, to expand or replace the Bowman Arts Centre. This unique new facility far surpasses the original vision for expansion, a

nd sets a new standard for interdisciplinary arts centres. Casa was built to serve a multi-generational community, with varying art skill sets and interests in all disciplines of the arts. Designing the building was a comprehensive and collaborative process led by Nyhoff Architecture from (Calgary) working in conjunction with the local architectural firm of Ferrari Westwood Babits. The Architectural team visited numerous arts education institutions and also met with members of the local arts community to define requirements for a truly functional 42,000 square foot art centre. The resulting building design is truly impressive.

Create botanical and garden forms with clay!

Artist Chiao-Chih Lu of Taiwan is visiting Lethbridge and bringing their organic handbuilding technique to a special two-day workshop at Casa. Day 1 focuses on Structural Strength, such as rock formations, tree trunks, and branches. Day 2 looks at Delicate Form with small, fragile elements like flowers and leaves. Register for 1 day or both and build plant-forms that will not die. Suitable for all skill levels.

Chiao-Chih Lu is a ceramic artist based in Taiwan whose work explores material, memory, and the relationship between natural forms and human experience. Her practice often centers on the dialogue between black clay and white porcelain, using their contrasting qualities to reflect ideas of transformation, balance, and impermanence. Black clay functions as a dense, grounding material, while porcelain carries a sense of lightness and fragility, allowing subtle gestures and traces of touch to remain visible.

Lu holds a BFA from ArtCenter College of Design in California and has participated in international artist residencies at Medalta Historic Clay District in Canada, the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) in the Netherlands, and Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan and exhibited internationally.

Design your own fabric with printmaking!

Artist Natalie Ge**er comes to Lethbridge with this special two-day workshop. Explore Textile Surface Design with relief printing and screenprinting on fabric. Take home a tote bag and a tea towel with your designs. June 6 & 7. Suitable for all skill levels.

Born in South Africa (Durban), the Calgary-based artist Natalie Ge**er began her studies at The Natal Technikon, in Fashion Design. After immigrating to Canada her interests in textiles developed while studying at The Alberta College of Art + Design, and later through post-graduate studies at the London College of Fashion in London (England). Following a decade focused on her design practice in textile printing, the artist earned her MFA in Craft Media from the Alberta University of the Arts. Ge**er’s artistic practice addresses the intersection of craft and design, explored through interdisciplinary experimentation and research in textiles, ceramics, photography, print media and book arts.

Currently exhibiting in our Main Floor Showcase are artworks by Winston Church High School Art IB students Cadence Unruh and Evelyn McCallum. There are 2 weeks left to view our current exhibitions!

Artist Statements:

Evelyn McCallum:
This exhibition aims to reflect on my high-school experience; particularly, the
experiences and lessons I learned. It was made to explore the successes and failures
I’ve had in the past couple of years, and to process what I learned from it all. I chose to
take this project in a deeply personal matter to challenge myself. Much of my art prior to
the pieces exhibited were more focused mostly on aesthetics; I wanted to make
something relevant to my life, while learning to be vulnerable in my art as well. Each
piece explores a different aspect of my life, whether failure or triumph, and was made
with the intent of highlighting the takeaway from each experience.

Cadence Unruh:
As the world continues to get evermore overloading and creative efforts feel like they
aren’t relevant anymore it gets easier to slip into a state of creative burnout. The want to
create, but no drive. The guilt of not creating and the cynicism. Or the sitting in front of a
blank page for hours with nothing to show for it except exhaustion.
This exhibition explores the struggle of creative burnout through my eyes. The past year
was a kick to the artistic ego and every bit of love or pride I felt about my work fell
through the gaps of my life. These pieces explore creative burnout in moments where I
felt myself wanting my passion back, mixing the comfort of old techniques and the thrill
of challenging new mediums. While creating this exhibit I’ve come to understand that
creative burnout is just a part of the process, it’s not pretty and the recovery isn’t always
elegant, it takes piecing together and patience.
My want is for others to see the hope in my work knowing there will always be art
waiting on the other side of the burnout. That there will come a time when you stop
feeling burnt out enough to paint about it.
