📖 • On This Day in Perkins Diary

On Friday, September 6th, 1805, Simeon Perkins writes in his diary the following…

"...E. McLeods Boat returns from Portmetway [sic] ... and to my Surprise & Joy he has brought my Daughter Elizabeth who was Sick there. Mr. Bishop his wife & my Daughter Eunice are come also my [sic] daughter Lucy will remain with us Some time."

🏠 • The Mr. Bishop that Simeon is referring to is Daniel Lathrop Bishop (1777-1848). Daniel married Simeon's daughter, Lucy Perkins, on January 2nd, 1805. In 1817, Lucy passed away at the age of 37. At some point, he remarried. His second wife was none other than Lucy's sister, Elizabeth "Betsey" Perkins.

📷Have you ever wondered what the Perkins family looked like?📷

Well, wonder no longer! Attached to this post are the known paintings, sketches, and photographs depicting various members of the Perkins family. Shown below are a sketch of Simeon Perkins, a depiction of his wife, Elizabeth Perkins, a painting of his son, John Perkins, and a photograph of his daughter, Elizabeth "Betsey" Perkins.

Unfortunately, we have not come across depictions of his children Roger, Abigail, Lucy, Eunice, Mary, Simeon Leonard, and Charlotte or his step-daughter Ruth. If you have a photo, painting, or sketch of any of these people, we'd love to see it!

📖 • On This Day in Perkins Diary

On Tuesday, July 29th, 1778, Simeon Perkins writes in his diary the following…

"Compleat [sic] Cap. Poulton's Protest, and also Mr. Pierpoint's Protest against Cap. Rowe. Mr. Tod, Cap. Lowe [sic], and Cap. Poulton go off for their Vessel. ... I charged Mr. Tod 10/, Mr. Poulton 5/, and Mr. Pierpoint nothing for their protests Considering their Circumstances."

⚖️ • Among many titles, Simeon Perkins was involved in the local justice system as a judge, magistrate, and Justice of the Peace. Below is a picture of the old courthouse in Liverpool, originally constructed in 1798. This is the site where Simeon presided over many legal cases and trials.

⚖️ • A modernized courthouse was built in 1854, which saw its older counterpart find new purposes. By the late 20th-century, it was being used as a storage place for salt and had fallen into disrepair. It was torn down in 1980.
