The Sydney and Louisburg Railway Museum in Louisbourg was founded in 1971 and first opened to the public in 1972. "Our purpose is to share, celebrate, and preserve the story of the S&L Railway and the rich history of the greater Louisbourg area." it is also the home for the regional Visitor Infirmation Center. The original station was built in 1895 and served as the railway station until 1968 when the line was discontinuted. The museums entirety includes the main station and the freight shed which are both original buildings from 1895. In 1993 the "round house" was built to house our 2nd class passenger car from 1881. Our rolling stock collection includes: two passenger cars, First-class coach car (1914) Second-class coach car (1881) A Caboose (1904), Freight car (1927) and our Oil tanker (date unknown). There is no specific admission charge, however, there is a donation box in the lobby area. An assortment of souvenirs are available in our gift shop located in the freight shed! All proceeds from donation box and gift shop go towards the maintenance, operation and ongoing restoration of the museum. The museum host Canada Day events each year for Louisbourg and area, as well as involved in a number of other community initiatives. The museum is open seasonally with the season subject to change with COVID-19 considerations. If interested in getting involved with the museum please send us an email or a Facebook message. We are available to respond year round.

Today our flag is at half mast in sympathy and support for all those impacted by the fire at CFB Wainwright.

In the face of such heartbreaking loss, we stand together in remembrance, keeping the victims, their loved ones, and the entire community in our hearts.

May those grieving find strength, comfort, and support in the days ahead.

We will remember. 🕊️

We saw that this week the Nova Scotia
Museum’s theme is Creepiest Object.

Our pick? This wooden wheelchair.

Used at the CN Station in Sydney, it was donated to the Sydney & Louisburg Railway Museum by A.C. Monroe, Trainmaster. It has helped tell the story of rail travel for years—but it may have a story of its own.

Over the years, our staff have noticed something unusual. The wheelchair has a habit of moving. It's been left in one spot in the upstairs living room, only to be found somewhere else later. No one remembers moving it, yet it never seems to stay where it was parked.

Could there be a perfectly logical explanation? Maybe. Or perhaps there's a former railway traveller who still enjoys wandering the station...

What do you think? 👀🚂👻
