In 1909, early settlers like the Sled family moved west to build a future for their families. The Lumsden district thrives today because of their hard work and successes.
My first contact with the Sled family name was a research book used at the Lumsden Museum. I was immediately engrossed by the detail and impressed by the effort of John Sled, the researcher and writer. His book is invaluable to the Lumsden Historical Society.
We thank the Sled family for forwarding Johns obituary and again, offer our sincere condolences.

Did you know the Canadian Parliament made Thanksgiving an annual holiday in 1879, but unlike today, the date was not fixed. It could fall in October or November depending on the year’s proclamation. The modern Canadian Thanksgiving date—the second Monday in October—became official in 1957.

For families on the Saskatchewan prairie, Thanksgiving was closely connected to the harvest. After months of planting, cultivating and harvesting, families gathered to give thanks for the food they had grown and the work that had sustained them. Thanksgiving meant church, family, neighbours and a shared meal—an opportunity to celebrate the harvest and prepare for the long prairie winter ahead.

Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated much the same. While I’m not a farmer, I am thankful for our bountiful garden, now preserved. I’m excited about a weekend full of family and friends visiting and sharing meals.

On behalf of the Lumsden Museum, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Gary Lillejord was the creator, welder extraordinaire of Fennrick. Thanks Gary.
The history of Fennricks name speaks of marshland and the map below shows the Lumsden Museum surrounded by water. Marshland.
I don’t have the name of the young lady who entered “Fenn”, but she was sure of her choice-and so are we!

A heartfelt thank you to the Scarecrow Committee, vendors, volunteers, businesses and locals for making the Lumsden Scarecrow Festival a success.
At the museum we checked off all the boxes! #1 was showing off our little village in the heart of Lumsden. The visitors toured the historic buildings, played games, watched demonstrations of long ago skills and enjoyed all that was offered. Especially Chillin' Like A Villain Soft Serve, thanks for the extra brownies on my sundae🙂
Lumsden High School SRC, thank you to the students that volunteered to help us set-up and tear-down, sell raffle tickets, guide visitors and kindly and willingly do whatever was asked of them! We are grateful!
The 50/50 winner has been notified AND we’ve chosen a winner for the Name our Scarecrow contest…but you’ll have to wait for the next post…lol shortly!

The gates will be open and we’ll be ready! We’ve got buggy rides, a Rope Making Demo, Photo Booth, an awesome Whittling demonstration, games, Bouncy Castle at 11:30 and food to satisfy all your cravings! Oh, I forgot, buy tickets for our 50/50 raffle, Name our Scarecrow Contest, Antique and Garage Sale run by Eamon(he’s back!)and last but not least Abby’s back too, to give guided tours! Whew, it’s gonna be a great day.

Congratulations Lumsden Duck Derby committee for your success, even with the not-so-pleasant weather!
The countdown is on for our next exciting event! Fingers crossed Lumsdens Scarecrow festival enjoys sunshine, good food and lots of visitors.
There will be plenty of good food and activities at the Museum for the whole family. See you there!

Many years ago, we needed money to build a new rink! Do you remember the Can Shed? Picking garbage at the Jamboree? Serving drinks for Wayne Martindale (owner of the Lumsden Hotel) at concerts in Craven. We raised money and had fun! The Lumsden Duck Derby was imagined by a group of volunteers committed to building and maintaining a facility for the entire community.

I mentioned last week, the museum needs your help in preserving stories for the future. This is one example. The Duck Derby. These pictures are from my personal albums. Please share your stories and photos of history being made:)
