✉️ Not All Letters Were Love Letters ✉️

Before email threads and instant replies, letters like these were the backbone of everyday communication — even for business.

On display at the Musée Morinville Museum are two local examples from the 1950s: a typed reminder about a past-due bill from an electrical contractor, and a handwritten follow-up about a vehicle sale. Long before PDFs and “per my last email,” these were the tools of trade and trust.

📮 In fact, Morinville’s very first postmaster, Father Jolicoeur, oversaw mail collection at the rectory in 1895. Letters could take weeks or months to arrive — and even longer for a reply.

These aren’t just old papers — they’re artifacts of a time when every word had weight, and every envelope held anticipation.

⛪ Built by Hand. Held by Faith.

On May 8, 1902, Reverend Éthier arrived in Morinville with a vision: to build a church that could serve a growing Catholic community. St. Jean Baptiste Church became more than a building — it was a place of gathering, memory, and meaning. In June 2021, that cherished building, shown in this 1950s aerial photo, was lost to fire. But not its legacy. As of May 2025, construction of the new St. Jean Baptiste Church shown right) is well underway, with plans to open by Christmas — carrying forward the spirit that has shaped this community for generations.

☎️ Built by Hand. Held by History.

In 1895, Abbé Jean-Baptiste Morin didn't wait for the future — he wired it in. With tamarack poles from settlers, two phones from the government, and wire in hand, Abbé Morin oversaw the construction of an 11-mile telephone line connecting St. Albert to Morinville. By 1896, the town’s first telephone office opened at the mission — linking Morinville to the world beyond. In the image: a rotary phone in the foreground, the story of a community connector behind it.

💈 Take a Seat in History! 💈

This Father's Day, we invite you to visit a spot that meant more than just a haircut. Our replica old-fashioned barbershop is anchored by a real piece of Morinville’s story — the original barber chair used by Mr. Ovide Gosselin, who served this town from the 1930s through the 1950s. His son, Raymond Gosselin, continued the tradition into the 1970s.

For decades, this chair was a place where fathers and sons caught up, neighbours swapped stories, and generations were shaped — one trim at a time.

Come relive those moments, and take a seat in the legacy of community and connection.

Pancakes and Pageantry

If you didn’t eat pancakes on the street, were you even at Frontier Daze?

📷 Photos from the museum’s collection capture everything: community breakfasts served outdoors by volunteers, local residents flipping flapjacks, and crowds gathering before the day’s festivities began.

👑 And of course — Frontier Daze Queen candidates graced the local papers, representing school spirit and community involvement.

Mornings filled with syrup, smiles, and civic pride — that’s Morinville tradition.

Frontier Daze Fever — As Told in the Headlines
Long before “Festival Days,” Morinville had Frontier Daze — and the town didn’t just mark it on the calendar… it whooped it up.

🗞 These 1971–72 newspaper clippings, part of the Musée Morinville Museum’s archive, capture the excitement leading up to a weekend filled with parades, pageants, rodeos, barbecues, demolition derbies, pancake breakfasts, fireworks, and even the beloved Frontier Daze Queen competition.

📸 Look closely and you’ll find teen candidates dreaming of helping children, festival planners wrangling wild schedules, and a whole community pulling together to make something unforgettable happen.

Today, we call it Festival Days — but these pages remind us of the spirit that built it: volunteer-powered, crowd-cheering, small-town joy.

📍 See these clippings and more historic Frontier Daze photos and items at the Musée Morinville Museum — open Wednesday to Saturday, 12 to 5 PM.

The Spirit of Frontier Daze

Before Festival Days, there was Frontier Daze — Morinville’s original wild and wesBefore Festival Days, there was Frontier Daze — Morinville’s original wild and wes celebration.

With floats, costumes, Festival Queen contests, bullriding and community breakfasts, this June tradition brought locals together for a full weekend of fun.

The photo archives at the Musée Morinville Museum show everything from chuckwagon races to pancake flipping to a "Mayor’s Shoot-Off" — and yes, those can-can costumes for the Frontier Jane and Les Girls performance!

🎡 We’ve always known how to mix fun with community spirit — and the legacy of Frontier Daze still echoes through today’s summer events.

Parades were the heart of Frontier Daze.

From the Morinville Drum & Bugle Band marching down the street in 1970 to elaborately decorated floats like the “Morinville Hockey Auxiliary” and local businesses decked out in fringe, everyone took part.

🚶‍♀️ Community members dressed the part — cowboys, pioneers, and children in costume lined the streets in celebration.

🪶 A float even featured the Frontier Jane & Les Girls troupe, bringing old-time saloon flair to Main Street.
