As we welcome June and the approach of the summer solstice, there’s been lots happening behind the scenes here at Upper Canada Village! From restoration projects to new programming enhancements, we’re excited to start sharing some of these special updates with you in the coming weeks.
This month also marks National Indigenous History Month - a time to honour the rich heritage, diverse cultures and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.
Today, we’re sharing the three-piece display that was unveiled last year at our Discovery Centre admissions area, created in collaboration with Kanerahti:io (DJ) White, Cultural Educator with Rise Up Studio of the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory.
This striking installation symbolizes continuous growth, cultural evolution, and the enduring vibrancy of Indigenous peoples. You'll notice meaningful colours like white (the path from darkness) and purple (wisdom and connection), as well various meaningful objects plus symbolic representations of the clans of Akwesasne: Bear, Wolf, Turtle, Deer, and Snipe - each playing a role in the creation story and the Tree of Life.
As a living history site welcoming thousands of visitors each season, we recognize the importance of meaningful representation, cultural awareness, and building strong community connections. This display is one step in an ongoing journey to amplify Indigenous voices, foster learning, and honour stories that have shaped and continue to shape - this land.
Because in a world where connection matters more than ever, storytelling remains at the heart of culture.
Next time you visit, be sure to stop by, reflect, and experience the new display for yourself.
