Fisherman's Life Museum

Fisherman's Life Museum Authentic coastal living on Nova Scotia’s beautiful Eastern Shore. Part of Nova Scotia Museum and your next adventure.

From the crackle of wood burning in the cook stove, to the smell of the saltwater breeze, come experience the warmth and welcome of Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore in a traditional fishing family’s home. Located only 40 minutes east of metro Halifax, this simple wooden house once belonged to Ervine Myers, his wife Ethelda and their 13 daughters. Like many other families who resided along Nova Scotia’s

shores in the early 1900s, the Myers’ made their living off both the land and sea; fishing throughout the summer and working the woods in the winter. Come visit this charming home and discover just how extraordinary ordinary life used to be.

Over the winter many fishermen found additional employment. Ervin Myers cut pulp and worked as a cook in a lumber camp.

Until recently, many fishers made their own nets and traps by hand.

Ensuring vessels are seaworthy and that gear remains ready for the waves is a dance that continues in tandem with the tides to the current day.

Standing tall and proud at the crest of the hill. This old house awaits a fresh month and perhaps, an additional coating of crisp snow.

Thoughtfully constructed in 1857, this home has experienced some living and many an old fashioned winter.

Here’s to continuing the legacy of refuge and welcome.

Unsure of how to feel about snow?

Located on the coast, our climate is moderated by the diverse moods of the North Atlantic Ocean. Snow can be here today and melting away the next.

Here’s to the many moods of nature regardless of the season.

A tree space fit for a pickle.

The arrival of winter coincides with celebration and reflection in many parts of the world. The origins of some traditions are clearly documented, while others are festively debated in friendly ways each season.

Said to have its roots in Germany, the hiding of the Christmas pickle upon the Tannenbaum (a Fir tree) each Christmas Eve has delighted people of many ages throughout the years.

Often the first person to find the pickle ornament the following morning was bestowed with a special gift and glad tidings of good cheer and luck for the new year ahead.

Traditionally, the pickle ornament was made of German glass, but some cloth or knitted varieties proved popular as well.

We trust you will agree; this tradition is the real Dill.
