Here is something a bit different. These mugs are inspired equally by clay and by the current world we inhabit.
I buy 3 different clays for my stoneware work in different colours: almost black, red and almost white. I reclaim all of my clay bits and scraps, in different proportions each time that create different coloured clays in a wide range of colours and tones that are reminiscent of the wide range of colours of human skin. Clay will still harden in the firing no matter the colour, will still crack or warp if dried too fast no matter the colour, will still break if struck no matter the colour; so too are humans. We have the same strengths and weaknesses no matter our colour, we are all still just clay.
The second inspiration for these mugs is the ongoing *frozen water* problems that our southern neighbours are having. As a first generation Canadian son of Mexican immigrants this issue hits pretty close to home, and I was moved to create some mugs that could give hope while having that nice cup of something.
'Viva la Revolución' means 'long live the revolution' in Spanish, and in this case I don't mean a bricks and rocks revolution but a revolution of the mind, a revolution of love and compassion to overcome the hate and fear that have brought us to this point in time.
If we can at last move beyond trying to colour code our worth we can begin the real job of replacing the racist, patriarchal and colonial societal structures that keep us divided and move toward a world where every human is as valuable as any other human, where our worth is inherent in our human-ness, and where co-operation, compassion and understanding can help us to acheive the fullness of our potential as homo sapiens.
See these and other wares at the Hanami Blossom Market tomorrow at the Fernwood Community Centre from 11am to 4pm.
Viva la Revolución.
