Before picnic tables, the infamous gazebo, and large NOTL sign dotted these grounds, Queenโ€™s Royal Park was once this site of a lavish hotel that became known as the Queenโ€™s Royal Hotel.

It opened in 1869 and catered to those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of big city life. Guests never had to leave the grounds to find relaxation and fun. Where the Park is today, sat the site of professional lawn bowling and tennis courts. Gusts could also rent boats, go to a bathing beach, fish, and golf at the two courses nearby. Casino nights and concerts were also held during the summer.

Itโ€™s already time to say goodbye to our three Summer students: Maisie, Calum, and Kiara. ๐Ÿ˜ข

Throughout the Summer, Curatorial Assistants Calum and Maisie diligently researched and curated exhibits that are currently on display in our Upper Memorial Hall Gallery. Calum curated an exhibit that explores the diversity of the Loyalists in NOTL., while Maisie chose to curate her exhibit on the 1955 World Scout Jamboree that took place on the Commons.

Our Programming Assistant, Kiara, took on a major role in organizing and hosting the Museumโ€™s summer camp as well as attending festivals with the Tiny Museum.

Beyond these projects, they toured visitors around the town as walking tour guides, they helped with research requests, worked on collections projects, assisted with programming and social media, welcomed visitors to the museum, and patiently answered our most asked question of the summer: โ€œWhat is that big hole out front?โ€.

We want to say a big thank you to each of them for all of their hard work over the summer and we wish them all the best as they head back to school!

Two positions were generously funded in part by the Government of Canadaโ€™s Young Canada Works/Jeunesse Canada au travail program.

This September 11, the gardens of the McArthur Estate will come alive for an afternoon among friends with wines from Konzelmann Estate Winery, signature cocktails from Niagara College Distillery, and fine food from Niagara's Finest Hotels. Guests will also have the pleasure of meeting historical characters brought to life, and bidding on truly special experiences and items in our silent and live auctions.

In 1911, the local Fire Department moved their fire hall from the Market Room in the courthouse on Queen Street to the building located at 10 Queen Street. Then in 1964, the fire hall moved up the street to 233 King Street (today the location of Aura-on-the-Lake). After that, several businesses moved into the building including Ye Old Fire Hall Gallery Antiques, run by Esme Allen, and the Canadian Mime Theatre. In 2009, this building was destroyed by fire, and it was rebuilt as a replica to help maintain the unique character of the heritage districtโ€™s main street.

Today 10 Queen Street is home to Sombra Mexican restaurant.
