๐ŸŒฟ June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada

This month, we honour the cultures, traditions, and enduring presence of First Nations, Inuit, and Mรฉtis peoples who have shaped this land since time immemorial.

Here in Niagara, we are grateful to live and gather on lands that carry a deep Indigenous heritage โ€” home to the Neutral Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy's Six Nations of the Grand River, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation of the Anishinaabek people.

This is also a time to reflect on the impacts of colonization and to ask ourselves: how can we each contribute to reconciliation?

On June 11, join us as we welcome the remarkable Rick Hill Sr., who will present and sign his book ๐๐ž๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ฌ: ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‹๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐“๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Œ๐จ๐ก๐š๐ฐ๐ค ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž, ๐‚๐š๐ง๐š๐๐š'๐ฌ ๐‹๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ-๐‘๐ฎ๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐’๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ โ€” tracing how Canada's oldest residential school was transformed into an educational visitor experience.

This building in St. Davids looks very different today than it did when this photograph was taken. Constructed around 1782 as a grist mill, it was one of the first โ€œKingโ€™s Millsโ€ in what would later become Upper Canada. The mill was originally operated by Peter Secord and his brother James, and was later run by David Secord, for whom the community of St. Davids is named.

Over the years, the mill was operated by several women. But it was Hannah Secordโ€™s defiance, and perhaps the musket she threatened the Americans with, that spared the mill from being destroyed during the burning of St. Davids in July 1814. Eventually, this building was transformed into the Old Mill Inn and hosted notable guests, including Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe, who dined there while filming Niagara in the 1950s. By the late 1980s, the building had fallen into disrepair and faced possible demolition. Rather than lose a structure that had simply outlived its original purpose, it was renovated and transformed into a private home!

For nearly two centuries, this stately home has borne witness to the unfolding history of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Its story begins in 1796, when the land formed part of a 160- acre grant to the Honourable Peter Russell, successor to John Graves Simcoe.

This September, its gardens will be shared with us for an afternoon.

In 1914, Queen Street became the focus of a major local improvement project, paving. The previous year, Mayor John Randall had championed paving the often-muddy street, but both the proposal and his re-election campaign were defeated. His successor, William 'Bill' Harrison, revived the plan by organizing Queen Street property owners, who successfully petitioned Council to proceed with the work.

This photograph, taken at the intersection of King Street and Queen Street, shows a 15-ton steam roller laying the new pavement. Pictured are William Murray, Alf Tester, Mayor Harrison, Harry Mathews, Curt Gordon, and Ivan Armstrong. The project ultimately saw Queen Street paved from King Street to Simcoe Street.
