It happened in Rideau ... just west of the Dwyer Hill Road is Gilroy Road, off Donnely Drive. Number 7406 is the Gilroy Homestead, now owned by the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Municipality. The sturdy log house was built about 1851. There was a multi-use barn, separate horse stable, sheep barn, hen house, wood house, root cellar when transferred in 1978. Today it is restored and sitting at the end of Gilroy road where even Google Streetview doesn't go. It has been valued as an example of one of the few remaining self-sufficient farms from the 19th Century. File 111-12b-020.tif in the Rideau LACAC archives.

It happened in Rideau ... from the Ottawa Daily Citizen 5 May 1876. Notice that "Boys and Indians are shooting muskrats ...". I saw muskrat around the township in the 1970s, and maybe I haven't been looking closely enough since then.

It happened in Rideau ... The Old Reeve Craig House 6472 Fourth Line, North Gower. This house is located on the south-west corner of Starshell Drive and the Fourth Line Road. It was built around 1910 by a branch of the Wallace family as a farmhouse and they were its first owners. In 1919 it was bought by Howard Craig who was Reeve of North Cower from 1923 to 1952 and Warden of Carleton County in 1929. After the death of his wife Cora in 1920 he and his five children (four girls and one boy) moved into the house and farmed the land. After serving as Reeve for 29 years Craig died in 1953 and the house passed to his son Edward. Edward died in 1973 and his son Hugh kept the house until 1984 when it was sold to the Moorcrofts and in 2006 to the O’Hara’s. LACAC files at the Rideau Branch, City of Ottawa Archives.

It happened in Rideau ... as reported in the Ottawa Daily Citizen Saturday, 1 November 1862. If you scroll pat the hoopla to the poem at the end see the wit of 1862.

'Consider well before you buy your Tea
If you a prudent purchaser would be,
For ‘tis a fact , which cannot be denied,
That much inferior Tea is now supplied.
You cannot well do better than procure
THE TEA POT TEAS, for they are rich and pure.
All who submit these samples to a trial,
Acknowledge they are good, beyond denial,
And are they not as cheap as they are good?
Yes — that’s a fact that’s clearly understood.
ROBINSON & Co.’s are best and cheapest too,
And these are what we recommend to you.'
