Just in time for the Back to School shopping spree, we’re thrilled to launch the MONOVA Gift Shop online!

Featuring notebooks in a range of Coast Salish designs, educational games, and an array of unique stationery items, we’ve got all the basics covered. You’ll also find our curated selection of historical books and biographies, covering topics that tie directly into the BC school curriculum (and, of course, your own personal interest).

As you will find in-store, our Gift Shop is fully stocked with fragrant wellness products, delicious teas and treats, and beautiful trinkets you simply can’t buy elsewhere.

We are also a proud supplier of the ‘Every Child Matters’ Orange T-Shirts, designed by the Indigenous community, and available in both Youth and Adult sizing for Truth & Reconciliation Day (Sep 30).

MONOVA's gift shop carries these adorable puppets from Native Northwest, designed by Indigenous artists and inspired by Indigenous cultural traditions. The puppets are available for purchase for $28 (so long as they aren't scurrying around our permanent gallery!)

For fans of puppets, they are also often featured as a part of our Campfire Storytime on Friday and Saturday mornings at 10:30AM. Campfire Storytime is an engaging, hands-on storytelling hour for tots aged 1-5, included with admission.

September is a busy month at MONOVA, and we'll be hosting lots of community programming dedicated to Truth & Reconciliation over the coming weeks. Swipe through the slides to see what learning opportunities we have in store, led and curated by Indigenous community members.

And it goes without saying, make sure to check out our feature exhibit: "Gifts to be Shared, Protected, & Carried Forward" presented in collaboration with the Squamish Nation This new exhibit proudly showcases SḾwx̹wú7mesh belongings and artistic expressions, creating a living connection between past, present, & future. Gifts to be Shared, Protected, & Carried Forward will be on display until March 2027.

Coal Harbour's famous floating gas stations actually have historic ties to North Vancouver! In the 1950s, the Texaco fuel barge was built by the Burrard Dry Dock's yard, and the Standard Oil No. 5 fuel barge (now the Chevron barge that remains in the harbour today) was designed and built on the North Shore. Last week, our team got together for a bonding activity to prepare crafting activities for our biggest community event of the year - Truth & Reconciliation Day. Led by our Indigenous Cultural Programmers, the day shares stories from the Squamish & Tseil-Waututh Nations, dedicated to embracing local Indigenous cultures and reflecting on the importance of Orange Shirt Day. No one knows the books in MONOVA's gift shop quite like our guest services department, making them the perfect folks to ask for a reading recommendation. This month, in recognition of the recent opening of the new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre, we're recommending Races: The Trials & Triumphs of Canada's Fastest Family by Valerie Jerome.

This biographical work takes a deep dive into the lives of the Jeromes, one of the few Black Canadian families in the North Shore in the 1950s. While much of the book focuses on Harry and Valerie Jerome's racing careers and achievements, Races also shares heavier themes about their encounters with racism and white supremacy. It's a deeply impactful read that shines a light on the family's fight for recognition and the positive changes made through the Jeromes' advocacy.

John and Evelyn Donovan moved to Lynn Valley in 1951, and shortly after discovering the city needed a riding club, they built their own equestrian stables on their property. Their riding club, the Laura Lynn Riding Club, eventually grew popular enough to have two barns to house 35 horses. The architectural team that designed the building, McCarter Nairne Architects, chose the technique to make the structure earthquake-resistant and protect against Lower Lonsdale's strong winds.
