You never know what you'll find in the archives!

This 1940 tax roll for Mono Township is on our "favourite things in the archives" list. Sure, taxes and municipal records might seem boring—but wait until you hear the story behind this book!

The story goes that a young man, too young to enlist in the Second World War, used this tax roll for target practice while preparing for the day he could serve. The bullet holes are still visible today.

Our Archivist, Laura, occasionally pulls this book for researchers, and it's always a treat to see their reactions when they discover its unexpected history.

⭐ Artifact Highlight ⭐

Dodd’s Kidney Pills were patented in Canada by brothers John and Robert McKee of Rosemont, Mulmur Township, and became a household remedy across the country. Marketed for backache, urinary irritation, and for “purifying the blood,” the pills were widely promoted through clever advertising and almanacs. They were made from plant-based ingredients and salts that encouraged the body to produce more urine, helping to relieve discomfort — but they were not a cure for kidney disease or diabetes, as they were often marketed.
