We've had a 'rewarding' week at the Museum!

Last night was the Osoyoos Museum Society (OMS) Annual General Meeting. We had a great turn out of OMS and community members, and were able to share the many successes the Society and the Osoyoos & District Museum and Archives achieved in 2025.

As part of the evening we added a new 'Member of Distinction'. Previously called 'Honourary Lifetime Members', a Member of Distinction is an OMS Member or member of the public who has made considerable contributions to the Museum as a donor, supporter, or volunteer. This year our nominee was someone who has not only supported the Museum over the years but multiple organizations in Osoyoos, we are pleased to acknowledge, Sue McKortoff. She is in good company with our other Members of Distinction - Gayle Cornish, Linda DeCock, Dorothy Fairbairn, Mat Hassen, Frances Sologuk, Larry Stone, and Ernie Westphal. Congratulations Sue!

And today was the Town of Osoyoos Volunteer Recognition luncheon. The Osoyoos Museum Society was recognized with a certificate of appreciation as a local volunteer organization as well as being named the 2025 Outstanding Community Group. Congratulations to the numerous volunteer organizations and individuals in Osoyoos and thank you to our OMS volunteers for a great year!

BCMuseum Week - Museums Matter

Did you know yesterday (May 20) was International Bee Day?! And did you know that Rotary District 5060 created a 'Pollinator Highway' from BC down into Washington? AND with funds from the Rotary Club of Osoyoos a pollinator garden was planted as part of the Osoyoos & District Museum and Archives Urban Heritage Garden. Rotary is just one of the local groups the Osoyoos Museum works with and another reason ‘Why Museums Matter’.

The garden is now open for the summer months, and it is also available to rent as an event space! Here you will see some agricultural artifacts donated by local farming families, as well as a water feature inspired by the ‘ditch’ which supplied irrigation water to many farms on the west side starting in 1929, and of course the pollinator garden.

Come visit! 8702 Main Street, Osoyoos

Welcome to BCMuseums week
Museums Matter - from Awareness to Action

Museums originated during the Renaissance as private collections of oddities and interesting items that were shared. As museums evolved many began to focus on specific topics or artifacts; although some are private or special interest, and some cover a broad spectrum of topics. Many small-town museums, the Osoyoos & District Museum and Archives included, focus on the stories and heritage of their community/ preserving those memories and sharing them for generations to come.

The role of a museum varies from person to person and museum to museum, no museum tells the whole story, even museums within the same area will tell a different piece of the story, so visit many, visit often, and see for yourself 'why museum matter'!
