Have you ever seen a spadefoot toad before?

Spadefoot toads are remarkable burrowing amphibians, named after the hardened, spade-like structures on their hind feet that act like tiny shovels. They dig backwards into the earth to bury their bodies and regulate their body temperature to stay cool and moist beneath the surface.

In our language, spadefoot toad is psqʷaqs, come visit us to learn more about how spadefoot toad got its name! 🐸

Look who’s bright eyed and blue skinny tailed ☀️💙

Our little friend, the western skink, has officially woken up from hibernation and is soaking in that warm desert sunshine again. After a long winter nap, they’re ready to scurry, explore, and remind us that spring has arrived at Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre 🌱

If you’re visiting, keep your eyes low and your curiosity high, you might just spot this speedy little neighbour darting by! 💨

2026 is a big year for us at Nk’mip Desert Cultural Centre 🌵🐺

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes: dreaming, planning, and building new experiences that bring people closer to the land, the stories, and the unique ecosystem of the Okanagan desert.

We’re so happy and proud to announce one of our newest additions for the season…

🌵✨ The Brittle Prickly-Pear Cactus Petting Zoo ✨ 🌵

An interactive experience where visitors can connect with some of our most iconic desert plants in a hands-on way.

Our team will be onsite to guide safe interactions and share knowledge about these incredible species…

Band-aids available at the front desk.

APRIL FOOLS’ 😛🎉

We do not recommend touching the cactus… they = ouchies 🌵

but for real, stay tuned for more exciting things coming in 2026 👀
