Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"Day #46 Orange IV", This is one of my Covid collages, made during the longest lockdown period. I decided to make one small artwork each day to have some routine and predictability, some form of outlet for all that was happening and to express my feelings about it. This process lasted for 209 days.

Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"Settling In; Staying Put", Completed during the long COVID lockdown, this moody painting was the one that made me decide to stop painting on top of highly textured surfaces. It has corrugated cardboard under the paint, beaten with a hammer so some of the ridges are a bit flattened. It's a lot about barriers, being closed in and repetition, probably not too surprising during the dark days of COVID.

"One Man's Treasure", I am very concerned about our use of plastics, our throw-away society, about landfills and our unceasing desire for more stuff. That's what this painting is about, inspired by my mom's missionary trips to the Dominican Republic. She saw people living in landfills, endlessly sorting mountains of garbage. They are anonymous in this artwork, almost an afterthought, much like they are in our world. What dominates is the mountain made from collected garbage.

Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"Reverie II", This mixed media painting has a woody root in it, embedded in the earthy, organic space. Above, the black and white, linear, logical area. I have found myself making and remaking this painting throughout my life, in different forms but always with the same story. It is about the miracle of potential when plants die back in the fall, when trees lose their leaves. How blessed are we with that annual rejuvenation?
18" x 18"

"Rendezvous", There is a lovely rhythm in this fairly dark abstract painting. It looks like after dark with its deep green void and shadowy rose and ochre shapes. The bright area are muted; we're not getting a lot of information. There is something secretive, hence "Rendezvous".

Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"On the Edge - Ice Road", This is a second of my "On the Edge" pieces about the northern regions. All aerial views seem to lose their realism since we rarely view our world from 'up there'. Here I use different acrylic media to create the icy areas and the barren land. It speaks indirectly about the environmental challenges to our beautiful north.
12" x 12"

"On the Edge - Boreal Forest", Again, I am intrigued by the aerial view of a landscape, abstracted in the sense that it is created with coarse granular medium and glassy resin to suggest bodies of water. It speaks indirectly about the environmental challenges to our beautiful land.

Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"Strati (Layers)", There's a lot in this little painting completed in 2025 on my art retreat in Sicily. Without trying to be descriptive, it alludes to architecture, arches and irregular roof lines, vibrancy and energy, olive trees and sunshine. Like Sicily, it has many layers.
14" x 14"

"Sky Writing", There are a lot of circular forms in this painting, bright colours and elements of text that are not quite legible. And there are large pale blue shapes. It somehow feels sleepy to me, like I'm lying on my back on a sunny day, looking up at the sky and letting my mind wander. I might even doze off...

Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"Glyph Echoes", I have often been told that people find my work quite moody, and this piece certainly fits that description. It has lots of collage in it and letter fragments that we feel like we should be to read. Next to the bright blues and greens, the dark space feels very mysterious.
18" x 18"

"Go North At the Telegraph Office", This is when I knew I was getting somewhere in my quest for more abstraction in my work. I'm especially attracted to the strong marks, both collages and drawn. Also, I love how the quiet, soft blue shape rests quietly on the opposite side. Lots of interesting stuff going on here.

Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"Cicatrici (Scars)", When I was in Palermo, we went to an ephemera market early one morning. There I bought very old pages from books, ledgers and newspapers. Everything was in Italian. frayed and yellowed with age...amazing! So I brought all of this paper home with me and used it in the artworks of this series. It so perfectly captures the essence of Sicily in its colour and raggedness. This piece shows fragments of the old city, all connected by lines, shapes and the ancient papers.
19" x 18"

"Centro Storico (Old Town)", This large artwork is part of my Sicily series, just one of the many narrow streets and balconied buildings. It is kind of my 'pièce de résistance', so well does it capture the character of the streets in the historical district of Palermo. Everything is tight and layered, rusty, broken and worn. But there is so much character and beauty in every nook and cranny- a feast for the senses.

Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"Porch Swing Slow", There is something about this painting that makes me think about the deep south on a hot, humid summer day. It may be those leaves, possibly bleached in the sun or the chartreuse green next to the soft mauve. It may be the contrast, the dark shadows and bright highlights, but no matter, it makes me think of the view from a front porch.
14" x 14"

"Only Breath Sounds", This past winter, while in Mexico, I learned how to snorkel. It was an incredible experience for me and I loved the solitude and feel of the warm water around me. But most of all, I loved the almost instantaneous peace and quiet in my brain, something I rarely have in my everyday life. This painting speaks about that.

Mixed media by Julia Lockie:
"Taking the Long Way Around", Again with collaged map fragments, this painting lets you wander though diverse spaces. In life, taking the longer, more scenic route is generally favoured. There is no telling what we may learn or what mysteries we may uncover. Definitely more time for deep thought and contemplation.
14" x 14"

"The Energy of Circular Breaths", I seem to have a lot of paintings with titles about breathing. I think it's because when I'm working in my studio, I'm generally my happiest and calmest. I find this reflected in many of my artworks, like the way I feel during the process of making is translated into the marks and shapes and colours I choose. I'm actually positive this is true.
