In Person Friends Forum – Tuesday, Nov. 28th, 2023

Guest Speaker Dr. Stacey Barker
Historian for the Arts and Military History Canadian War Museum.
TOPIC: “THE CANADIAN FORCES ARTISTS PROGRAM – GROUP 9 “
The Canadian Forces Artist Program – Group 9 exhibition, currently on display at the Canadian War Museum, sits within a rich tradition of official Canadian War Art, going back over a century.
How did official war art get its start in Canada, and how did it get to where it is today? What links the contemporary artists of Group 9 to artistic forerunners such as A.Y. Jackson, Mabel May, Alex Colville, or Molly Lamb Bobak?
Dr. Stacey Barker will discuss these topics in a presentation, followed by a walkthrough of the CFAP Group 9 exhibition and Q&A.

Today is National Aviation Day! ✈️

A gifted athlete who participated in international competitions before the war, Gerald “Gerry” W. A. Bell enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1936. During the Second World War, he served as an aircraft technician in Canada and overseas.

Bell survived the war and continued to serve in the RCAF at bases across Canada and in Germany before retiring in 1961. Not one to rest, he had a second career in the aviation industry and even helped restore an Avro Lancaster bomber.

Harold Beament, one of Canada’s war artists during the Second World War, depicts the crew of HMCS Pictou's 4-inch gun and the griffon from their ship's crest painted on the gun shield.

During the Second World War, Canadian warships adopted a variety of unofficial crests, as well as artworks prominently placed on their gun shields. While some were based on the ship's name, or featured characters based on popular cultural references, others had less obvious origins.

In Pictou's case, the griffon was a reference to the ship's commanding officer, Anthony Griffin.
