Parks Canada’s Climate Crew is teaming up with the Canadian Museum of Nature and Cree communities in this new episode, “More Than Meets the Eye”, to uncover climate change insights with the help of the museum's collections! ✨

The Museum’s collections hold key data from the Hudson Bay Lowlands, a biodiverse-rich, carbon-storing region within the Traditional Territories of several First Nations. By sharing expertise, specimens, data, Indigenous knowledge, and with the help of community scientists, a better understanding is being gained of climate-related changes across the region. 🌱🌎

💻📓💡Education & public engagement are at the heart of the Museum! Our curriculum-linked school workshops make science fun, accessible, and inclusive for students across Canada.

Up until now, we’ve reported reaching 16,180+ students online and onsite. We’re on track for 18,000 by June! We have delivered our virtual workshops to all provinces and territories—23 of which were delivered to Indigenous communities thanks to our friends at North Connected North. Our most booked virtual workshop this year was Exploring Rocks & Minerals 💎 ✧˖°.🌋 Our most booked onsite workshop this year was Discovery-Tank Experience °:•.🐠*.•🪸.

A teacher from Northwest Territories says:
"My students connected with the Northern Indigenous culture and connection to the land and the animals. It was all engaging, easy to follow and interesting. We appreciate that the instructor shared real life things that individuals did and can do to help protect their environments. This makes tangible and empowering connections for the youth. Coccotylus truncatus is a species of red algae that is found in the cold oceans of the northern hemisphere. This particular specimen was collected in the Arctic near Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. ❤️

The colour comes from a special pigment: phycoerythrin. This compound enables the organism to capture light and perform photosynthesis even in deeper, dimmer waters.

It’s International Biodiversity Day! 🌍

But what is biodiversity? Simply put, it’s the diversity of life on Earth from the tallest trees to the smallest, often overlooked creatures.

We often notice biodiversity during the day, but nighttime reveals a whole other world worth protecting. As dusk falls, woodland ecosystems come alive. Salamanders emerge in the cool evening air to avoid drying out, while bats, shrews, and mice take advantage of the darkness to forage with less risk from predators.

Even these quiet, unseen animals play a vital role in healthy ecosystems.
