May 12th is !

Today, we commemorate the Manitoba Act 1870 receiving Royal Assent on May 12, 1870 — paving the way for Manitoba to become Canada’s fifth province, and the only province brought into Confederation through the leadership and efforts of Indigenous Peoples.

Louis Riel, often recognized as the founder of Manitoba, was officially acknowledged for this role more than 120 years later. His legacy of advocating for minority rights and cultural cooperation remains at the heart of our province today.

To mark the occasion, we were proud to present Portage la Prairie City Hall with a photograph of the very first City Council of Portage la Prairie from 1881 — a meaningful way to honour our shared history. Did you know our first Mayor was Thomas Collins. Collins played a significant role of the development of the City and our community.

We’re just 3 days away from Volunteer Day!

There’s still work to be done to get the site ready for the season—and we need your help. With limited staff, this day is essential to making sure our buildings, grounds, and stories are ready to welcome visitors.

We’ve been part of this community for 59 years, and that’s only been possible because of the support and dedication of people like you.

By volunteering, you’re not just lending a hand—you’re helping preserve and share our local history for the entire community.
