Last year the river broke up on April 14th. The ice was there and suddenly it wasn't. It was hardly noticed leaving. Other years it has been a big event with lots of people coming down to the river bank to watch it go out. The most energetic break up that I remember was in 2020. Look at these two pictures. The top one was from 2010 and the bottom one from 2020. Can you spot the difference?
Maybe the ice will have gone out by the time this post goes live, but if not, when do you think the ice will go out this year? What's your best river break up story? Whenever it is we are all going to celebrate! πŸŽ‰

What a difference 24 hours makes, the ice is starting to pile up near the bridge!

The Southsider Motel was located at 204 30th St. West. It appears in the Henderson Directory in 1956. Anybody remember this cozy little motel?

Did you know, by looking at the river ice breakout records, that there are only 10 days since 1878 that the river has gone out after April 28th!
Four of those dates were in May!!
May 2, 1880; May 5, 1893; May 11, 1907; May 8, 1909

By the way the river looks, it may be another May break up this year!

This is the M & L Motel & Diner at the junction of Highway 11 and 2. It appeared in the Henderson Directory in 1962. Look at all of the boats in the second picture. It seems to have been a popular stop over for fishermen going north. Is this the little motel that is still at the junction?

"My first home when I was a child was in the 2100 block of 2nd Avenue West. One evening, when I was likely about six years old, my father needed to buy ci******es. He asked me to join him on his walk to the Flamingo Motel. At that time, the motel was on the outskirts of the city, and it seemed to my young legs to be an awfully long walk just to buy ci******es. Given that the motel was located in the 2600 block of 2nd Avenue West, where the Co-op Gas Bar (2655 – 2nd Avenue West) and the South Hill Medical Clinic (2685 – 2nd Avenue West) currently are located, it really wasn’t that far."
