The Exploration Place

The Exploration Place Past, Present & Future: Making History Together Over 100,000 people visit us each year, including visitors to Prince George and the region.

The Exploration Place Museum + Science Centre is owned and operated by the Fraser-Fort George Museum Society, a non-profit and registered charity. The Exploration Place is a Northern BC non-profit organization and registered Canadian charity whose goals are to preserve our local history and foster lifelong learning in science, technology, heritage, and culture. We have taken a leadership role in o

ur region since the museum's inception in 1958 and have been offering quality educational programming for over three decades. The Exploration Place is the largest museum and the only science centre in Northern BC and is an important cultural asset for the region and province. It is the designated collections and archival repository for the City of Prince George, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, and the Lheidli T'enneh Nation. We provide educational and cultural programming for all ages, heritage and curatorial services, and a community gathering space. We have been operating as a Class A Museum since 1981, with the Fraser-Fort George Museum Society officially designated in 1958. After temporary homes in multiple venues, the Museum acquired a permanent home in 1972 on the original village site of the Lheidli T'enneh Nation, now Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park. We underwent a major facility expansion in 2001 and have been operating since as The Exploration Place Museum & Science Centre, the largest cultural institution in BC's northern region. Our Mission: To provide a local lens on our evolving world by fostering discovery and engagement.

Most people know The Exploration Place as a science centre and museum, but our historical collection runs deeper than many realize. We hold over a million photographs, thousands of artifacts, and archival materials documenting the history of Prince George and the region.

Did you know we have an online public collections database? You can search and browse everything we have accessioned, as well as materials from our cultural partners and the Lheidli T'enneh. It's the kind of rabbit hole you might not come out of for a while.

Not every record has a photo yet, as our curatorial team and volunteers are continuously working through the collection. It is work that is never truly finished.

In May 1986, Prince George hosted a royal visit from Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales. This commemorative guest book, now part of our collection at The Exploration Place, marks the occasion, and you might recognize the signatures inside.

Were you in Prince George for the visit? Tell us in the comments.

Did you know that school programs at The Exploration Place are completely free?

Thanks to generous support from the Drax Canada Foundation, Northern BC schools can visit us, participate in hands-on, curriculum-linked STEAM and heritage programs, and, in many cases, have our educators come to them, all at no cost.

Last school year, we served nearly 4,000 students across the region. This year, we are on track to reach even more, and we have some exciting new programs on the horizon for September.

Spots for the remainder of this school year are filling up fast, so if you are an educator or know one, now is the time to book. Visit https://theexplorationplace.com/programs/teachers-students to reserve your spot.

Admission-by-donation Thursdays exist because we want The Exploration Place to be accessible to everyone, and because the community has shown up for us in ways we're genuinely grateful for.

Whatever you give at the door on Thursdays goes directly toward keeping this place going. See you tomorrow!

Five spots left in Brilliant Botany, our Week 1 Science Alliance camp running June 29 to July 3.

Campers explore plant science through hands-on activities, exploration, and visits from guest experts. A good week for a kid who likes to dig into how things work.
