We are proud to introduce the first editions in our Functional Art collection: The Killer Whale crib board, “Family”, and the Mother and Baby Humpback Whale board, “The Guardian”, both designed by Jeremy Humpherville.
Our vision for these pieces is to create meaningful keepsakes — functional works of art that become treasured family heirlooms and memorable gifts for generations to come. Each piece is carefully crafted to be both beautifully displayed and enjoyed in everyday use!
Made from premium solid woods, these crib boards are designed for a lifetime of enjoyment. Every board includes precision-machined metal pegs and a quality deck of cards presented in a compact case. The carvings are high-quality reproductions of original artwork, much like a fine art print, and will be available exclusively through Coastal Carvings Art Gallery.
Creating functional art at this level takes time, care, and craftsmanship. We are excited to continue developing new designs and look forward to sharing future pieces as they are completed.

It was a honour to work with Robert Van Pelt in the creation of PEETZ Canada 100th anniversary edition fishing reel. A major accomplishment is an understatement for any company that celebrates a 100 year anniversary. This was much more than just handing over a design to add on to the 100 limited edition reels. We wanted to create something very special in-house at Coastal Carvings; a work of art with new materials and a unique approach to match the Peetz 100 year milestone.

Our approach took over a year and could not have been accomplished without adding new technology to Coastal Carvings: a very high precision CanCam CNC Machine. Coastal Carvings acquired the CNC in order to translate our original design and engrave all of the fine detail at such a tiny scale. Executing the intricate carved designs into the solid brass for the reels was accomplished with a 20 thousands of an inch tool!!! The result of the collaboration is “functional art” worthy of the finest of collections.

We are pleased to reveal the PEETZ Canada "100 year anniversary edition reel". Each reel is hand built with the same quality PEETZ Canada have always been known for. The reels are then inlayed with the Salmon design that has been engraved into solid brass. You can watch the entire collaborative process and the creation of the reel in Season 2 of ‘Coastal Carvings’ documentary series on APTN…coming soon.

Many are passionate about creating their forever home. A house that they would like generations of family to enjoy. How do you add a unique finish to functional areas like staircases and walkways?

Our clients, with this beautiful log home, have been on a wonderful journey with us. You often become friends when you spend this much time in discussions and conceptualizing meaningful spaces with clients.

The design focused around the theme of “Family”, something very important to our clients, and friends. The posts had to be both beautiful as well as functional. Black walnut logs were created with many months of hand texturing and artistic shaping. The artwork is multi-medium with a combination of feature animals carved in wood with metal art setting the scenes. As you venture up the staircase on the right you are greeted by Salmon climbing the waterfall to pass on life to the next generation. Just above the Salmon staircase to your left a hungry Eagle soars eyeing the Salmon that will feed her young. Arriving at the top of the staircase two frogs climb out of the water and up the post. As you wander down the hall, to your right the fresh water meets the ocean and Killer Whales swim as a pod along the catwalk. Next you are greeted by a Humpback whale on its journey to feed in our rich Coastal waters. To the left side of the catwalk you are greeted by a mother Bear and her cubs. The Bears are following along with a family of Wolves on the next panel. Walking past the grand King Post in this home you are greeted by a herd of Elk with the Bull calling out to his Cows. The second to last post that separates the last panel has an Owl carved into the post. The Owl’s hiding place is only visible from the floor of the great room below. Finally, hidden in the shadows, is a Mountain lion and her cubs, always on the prowl as they stalk the Elk.

The opportunity for the Coastal Carvings Family to be creative on this level is something we never take for granted. Working through challenges on a project like this ( and there were a few ) only built stronger bonds between all of our team. We look forward to sharing the creation of this project with you in the upcoming Season 2 of the ‘Coastal Carvings’ Documentary series on APTN.

What to do with a feature log in a beautiful log home? Our clients were looking to include a carving that would sit on a feature log that extended into the great room and dinning area. Working together with the clients and their ideas we designed a beaver carving “The Craftsman”. The Beaver is portrayed as the builder who is finishing his last log in the construction of the home. We added carving to the end of the log to simulate the beavers craftsmanship. Its is such a pleasure to always be working with clients concepts in their unique homes.

The latest creation by Jeremy Humpherville and Lorne Hussey entitled “Silent Hunter”!

The Blue Heron stands perfectly still as the last light of the orange sunset changes to the soft glow of the moonlight. The Salmon egg moon is reflected in the eye of the heron. Inside the Heron’s folded wing is the eye, nose and mouth of the human. The background texture is linear depicting the motionless air and Heron as he peers into the currents for his prey.

The piece started with a beautiful turning by Lorne and then Jeremy designed to the finished turning. Turned from western maple and measures 23.25 inches
