Titled "REMNANTS"
This piece started with some strips that had been trimmed from two other smaller art quilts. I liked the colours and the pieces made me think of ice.
A book I have recently read by Robert MacFarlane (“Underland, A Deep Time Journey”) had me transfixed as his group witnessed the cracking and calving of the Knud Rasmussen glacier in Greenland. This exploration of deep time and deep places ventures into the big questions of our time; man's place in the environment. (I highly recommend all his writing).
And so my Ice Sentinels were born. They might be seen to guard the last of the glaciers, but they can also be seen as 'Remnants' of their millions of years as a glacier. I hope they guard Greenland for a long time to come.
I cut the strips into chunks, played with layout, and found some hand dyes that matched the northern lights and the deep sea. I zigzagged around the edges, stitched them in place and added a scrap of lace splash as one of the sentinels falls into the sea. Another berg floats free.
I ran into some difficulty while trying to quilt this piece. The layers were too thick and my machine was skipping stitches like crazy, There was no other choice but to hand quilt and I'm happy I did. (Fingers not so much happy).

Windfall: Santa Anna Katabatic Conflagration

January was a devastating month for California. Historic windfalls (gold rush, Hollywood) notwithstanding, this wind brought an altogether different result. The Katabatic winds (offshore) fell from the hills, desiccating vegetation and fueling fires as never seen before. Yet another catastrophic event in the relentless march of climate change. The blue sky and water contrast with a stylized burst of flames. Charcoal embers fly piercingly on the wind.

Hand dyed, fused, machine embroidered. Cotton fabrics and batting.

Turtle, Mother Earth; Foundering.

Here is a recent textile piece; a repeat on the theme of "Mother Earth". I first did this theme in 2013. This is the 2024 version.

Based on the North American myth that the earth is carried on the back of turtles, the 2013 piece was bejeweled and swimming in the black universe. I do remember that she had angry red eyes.

After 11 years I don't have as much hope as then, so my 2024 "Turtle, Mother Earth" is foundering, her integrated systems are failing. As complex earth meets headwinds of change, parts are fracturing away. Her red coral and black bead eyes are still glaring.

Shibori dyed background, encrusted fabric, felt, hand dyed & stamped fabrics, poly embroidery threads, cotton/poly batting, fusible, coral and glass beads.
