Information for Museum Visitors related to COVID-19 Measures:

The City of St. Catharines, in line with the Province’s next phase of reopening, will be removing the requirement for proof of vaccination to enter City facilities, including the Museum, as of March 1. Capacity limits have also been lifted, however, masking and physical distancing requirements continue. In addition, due to on-going con

Today is Decoration Day in Canada. This was the country's main day of honouring and mourning veterans until being superseded by Remembrance Day in the 1930s. Decoration Day had been started in 1890 by veterans of the Fenian Raids, specifically marking the Battle of Ridgeway, which took place on June 2, 1866.

This photo shows a Decoration Day ceremony held in St. Catharines in 1939. Though the holiday's significance was already fading by this time, it received a temporary boost due to the impending war in Europe. Tensions with Germany, combined with King George VI's scheduled Canadian visit less than a week later, had inspired a local air of patriotism and duty.

We were sad to hear of the passing of hockey legend and long-time St. Catharines resident, Dennis Hull. Dennis played for the St. Catharines Teepees for two seasons and later returned to the Garden City to study at Brock University and teach at Ridley College.

This photo shows Dennis Hull with the Teepees in 1960.
