Saint John Jewish Historical Museum The museum will be open by appointment only from November 7, 2022 to May 23, 2023. Visitors will also be able to see the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue.

Summer Hours, June 1, 2026 to November 4, 2026
Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm, Sunday (July and August and cruise ship days), 1 pm to 4 pm The museum will reopen on May 23, 2023 through November 7, 2023 with regular hours from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm from Monday and Friday, additionally th

e doors will be open on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00 pm during July and August. The feature exhibit for 2023 will be "Coming of Age: Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah Celebrations"" Additional exhibits are "From the Cradle to the Grave: Jewish Holy Days and Way of Life" and "Starting a New Life: Holocaust Survivors in New Brunswick". Museum admission fee of $5.00/adult or $10.00/family (2 parents and children up to age 16) . Appointments available for group tours, library research and education kits. Explore the Jewish history of Saint John through stories, photographs and artifacts.

Edythe Carole Freedman Steinberg died on June 11, 2025. She was born in Saint John and was the daughter of Rose (Selick) and John Jacob Freedman. She had a sister, Marcia (Jerry Koven), the founder of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, and two brothers, Lew (Ita) and Bernie (Natalie). Edythe, who graduated from nursing school in Brooklyn, New York, married Barry Steinberg, a native of Brooklyn and graduate of Dalhousie Medical School, on Dec. 20, 1959, at the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue. They settled in southeastern Massachusetts and raised two sons, Adam (Allison) and Jacques (Sharon). Among the many joys in her life were celebrating simchas with family, especially her four grandchildren – Alexandra, Jordan, Zachary and Hayden – and her many nieces and nephews.

20th Maine Co. I and DeLancey's Brigade - Revolutionary War Re-enactors are often at events in the Saint John area as well if you love a good reenactment. Ronna Ilene Bernstein died June 2, 2017 at the age of 78. She was the daughter of Nathan and Florence Taub of Montreal and had one brother: Michael. Her father had emigrated to Montreal from Satinov Podol'sk Russia in 1904 with his parents and seven brothers and sisters and with his brothers started Taub Brothers, a dress manufacturing company. Her mother, came from Syracuse, New York. Ronna grew up in Westmount, Quebec and at 19, married Mortimer (Mort) Bernstein on September 2, 1958.They settled in Saint John where they had three children, Janie, Eric and Stacey. Ronna was an active member of Hadassah and Sisterhood. The family moved to Toronto in 1979, where Ronna and Mort later divorced. Ronna developed a thriving real estate business and later became a successful interior decorator, a career she loved and in which she thrived.

Jacob Zatzman died on June 4, 1965. He was the son of Max and Ethel Zatzman and had two brothers – Louis and Morris – and two sisters - Faigie (Mrs. Hyman Taxar) and Leah (Mrs. Joseph Wanerman). He was married to Tilly and they lived at 1 Goodrich Street where they raised six children - two sons, Meyer and Charles - and four daughters, Sophie (Mrs. Nathan J.) Sandler, Lillian (Mrs. Saul) Harris, Sophie (Mrs. Albert Brym) and Miriam (Mrs. Gordon Cornell). He was the co-founder McCormack and Zatzman, which imported and exported fish. His son, Charles, later became the president of the company.
