Winnipeg River Heritage Museum / Musée du patrimoine de la rivière Winnipeg We are officially open and have lots to see and share about the heritage of the Winnipeg River, come check us out!!

The Winnipeg River begins in Lake of the Woods, Ontario, meanders through boreal shield wilderness and flows into Lake Winnipeg. Despite its rugged beauty, the Winnipeg River was a dangerous route with many rapids and portages.

The Indigenous peoples used the river to move with the seasons and gather for trade. In 1734, members of the La Verendrye expedition arrived on the Winnipeg River and be

gan the westward expansion of European explorers and fur traders. Over the next two centuries, civilization spread onto the frontier. Families settled upon the banks of the Winnipeg River, carved communities out of the wilderness and capitalized on the region’s rich resources.

The Winnipeg River Heritage Museum’s exhibits and interactive displays capture the spirit of the people who have endured and thrived on the river for generations. Discover tales of Indigenous and Métis peoples, trading posts, missionary-established settlements and industry-driven communities. Witness the development of hydroelectric generating stations that changed the Winnipeg River forever. Begin the journey to uncover the Winnipeg River region’s unique history.

We’ve welcomed some beautiful new additions to our museum gift shop!

We’re excited to feature a collection of handcrafted birch bark containers, walking sticks, and smudging fans created by George Slater of Great Falls, Manitoba. A self-taught artist, George draws inspiration directly from the natural world around him—each piece reflects a deep connection to the land and traditional craftsmanship.

These one-of-a-kind items make meaningful gifts or special keepsakes, and we’re proud to support artists who bring such care and authenticity to their work.

We’re always looking to grow our gift shop with unique, locally made pieces. If you’re an artist or maker interested in showcasing your work, we’d love to hear from you!

In 2015, a group of women began tying red ribbons on a local bridge in The Pas to acknowledge the many missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. Althea Guiboche then led this movement in Winnipeg as a gentle reminder to keep the women and girls in one's heart, thoughts, and prayers. The MMIW movement has since expanded to include Indigenous girls and Two-spirit individuals who are missing or have been murdered.

These ribbons were given to the Museum after they were found on the ground having been removed from the Esplanade Riel railings by City of Winnipeg workers. MMIWG2S is acknowledged each year on May 5 and also known as Red Dress Day.

Spring is slowly coming to life along the river—but here at the museum, we’re already buzzing with summer energy!

We’re currently featuring a vibrant mixed media exhibition in partnership with Maison Des Artistes (Winnipeg), while also preparing a virtual WWI exhibit and putting the finishing touches on our community butterfly garden—opening early this summer.

We’re also excited to launch our community birdhouse building competition & exhibition! 🐦 Submissions are due May 29, 2026, with entries on display all summer long.

Behind the scenes, we’re gearing up to participate in a strategic planning session with Community Futures, welcoming two summer students, and preparing community programming—including our annual golf fundraiser.

There’s a lot happening, and the energy is high! Stay tuned for more updates—and don’t forget to visit our website to learn more: https://winnipegrivermuseum.com/

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers, sponsors, and community supporters—our work would not be possible without you!

We had to remove several trees next to the parking lot last year, and the larger pieces were set aside. Today, we were thrilled to welcome our newest carving to the WRHM.

Thank you Jim Neidermeyer for bringing that tree to life through your art.

Gathering Our Heroes

Do you have a loved one or ancestor who served in World War I?

The Winnipeg River Heritage Museum is preparing a special WWI archive exhibit to honour the brave men and women from across our region who served and sacrificed.

We are gathering letters, photographs, family stories, keepsakes, and military records that help tell the stories of local heroes from communities throughout the region, including Pinawa, Point du Bois, Lac du Bonnet, Great Falls, Silver Falls, St. Georges, Powerview-Pine Falls, Sagkeeng First Nation, Little Black River First Nation, Manigotagan, Bissett, Traverse Bay, Albert Beach, Hillside Beach, Balsam Bay, and Victoria Beach.

Behind every name is a family, a memory, and a legacy that deserves to be remembered. If your family has a story to share, we would be honoured to help preserve it for future generations. We've created a facebook group titled 'WW1 Community Archive Project' to help share and collect these stories.

Please join our group, share this post, tag family members, and help us spread the word throughout our communities.

Together, we can ensure their courage and sacrifice are never forgotten.

The Winnipeg River Heritage Museum extends our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Leah Keeper, and to the entire community of Sagkeeng and beyond.

Leah was a beautiful and bright young woman whose life mattered deeply. We hold her family and the community in our thoughts and prayers as we grieve this profound loss.

We pray for justice for Leah, for healing within the community, and for a future where all our relatives are safe, valued, and protected.

Memorial Vigil Honouring Leah Faye Keeper

Leah Keeper was taken from her family and community for far too long. For years, her loved ones searched, spoke her name, and carried the weight of not knowing where she was.

Now, Leah has been identified and will be brought home. This vigil is a time to stand with her family, to honour Leah, and to hold space for their grief.
