You don’t need railway or mechanical experience to volunteer with Waterloo Central Railway 🚂

From organizing heritage baggage cars to helping at events and working behind the scenes, there are so many ways to get involved and be part of an amazing team.

Our volunteers recently spent the day working together in the rail yard, then enjoyed lunch together after a job well done, proving that enthusiasm, teamwork, and community spirit go a long way!

This may look like just an old headlight, but it’s actually a rare piece of Canadian railway history!

This vintage gyralite was originally used by Canadian Pacific beginning in the 1950s on RDC coaches like CP 9114 and 9072 when they operated as self-propelled branch line trains. Mounted on the front center door, the light produced a distinctive flashing pattern as the train approached.

When VIA Rail took over passenger service around 1980, most of these lights were removed and scrapped. Today, only a handful are believed to still exist.

WCR has been searching for one for years to help restore the authentic appearance of our RDC equipment, and we are incredibly grateful that this one was generously donated from a private collection.

It may not look like much, but this is a true railway treasure and another important step in preserving Canadian railway history.

The Heritage Hopper runs Thursdays and Saturdays until October 29, plus Tuesdays from June through August.
