International Museum Day! Museums remind us of our shared history throughout the world and our connections. In the Blackhead Museum we share our history through genealogy. Our early families came mainly from Ireland, England and Sweden. We harvested codfish to feed people all over the world including England, Spain, Italy, and Portugal. WWII brought Canadians and Americans to Fort Cape Spear, and we welcomed them. There is much more that connects us in this world than separates us!

WE ARE HIRING!!
Museum Interpreters (2 Positions)
June 27 – August 21, 2026 (8 weeks, 35 hours per week)
Wage: $17.40 per hour (work weekends)
Your own transportation to the site is required.
Canada Summer Jobs Criteria: between 15 and 30 years at the start of the job, a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred, valid SIN.

Duties: Guide will greet visitors, provide historical background and offer guided tours. The guide will record visitor information. The Guide will also be responsible for light maintenance around the building, keeping grounds free from garbage and building clean.

Qualifications: This position is open to mature individuals, who are able to work under minimum supervision. You should be at ease in public speaking and talking with people individually. Ideally you should have an interest and/or experience in historical/heritage research/education.

Great job!

Today we're featuring all grade category winners of our 2026 poster contest. Alyssa Byrne, a Grade 12 student at St. Kevin’s High in the Goulds, St. John's, is the Senior High winner for her depiction of St. Joseph’s Chapel and One-Room School in Blackhead, St. John’s. Alyssa chose this building because of the fond memories she has of it. Her mom took her and her brother there when they were younger. She remembers that they "would sit on the bench at the desk and pretend we were at school. Neither of us were old enough to go to school, but I remember having fun when we visited. As I grow older, I see the importance of preserving our past and appreciating its importance in the present day."
