On This Day: May 28, 1788, Rev. Rana Cossit, Cape Breton's first permanent Protestant minister, his wife and their seven children move into their new home in Sydney. In the spring of 1785, Rev. Cossit was sent here from New Hampshire by the society for the Propagation of the Gospel, which was relocating its ministers. Rev. Cossit becomes involved in bitter local political conflicts until he leaves Sydney in 1800.
His house, on Charlotte Street, is among the oldest in Sydney, just a few months younger than the Jost House across the street. A property of the Nova Scotia Museum, it is operated by the Old Sydney Society. July 11, 1983, it becomes protected under the Nova Scotia Heritage Properties Act.

MacTalla carries local and world news, as as history, proverbs, Greek mythology and correspondence. It was published for the last time on June 24, 1904.
Eighty-seven years later, during Inverness's 75th anniversary in 1979, Rev. Roderick MacLeod, publisher of the first Gaelic newspaper in Scotland (1977), pays tribute to Jonathan G. MacKinnon at a graveside memorial service at Stewartdale Cemetery near Dunakin.

On this Day November 1,1918
The Cape Breton Branch of the Great War Veterans Association is formed at a meeting of returned soldiers. The actual number of returned soldiers in Cape Breton is quite small, but the men of the two local Military Convalescent Homes, the Ross and Moxham Military Hospitals come from a large area. Others have returned and are now working on munitions' inspection work at the steel planta. Close to 150 soldiers gather tonight at the Cape Breton County Council Chambers to form the Cape Breton branch. Another branch has been organized at Sydney Mines to accommodate the men on the Northside.

Boston is the best market for more than one million pounds of swordfish harpooned off Cape Breton this year. Some nights there are over 200 boats sheltering in Glace Bay Harbour, and you can cross the harbour by walking on the decks. An even larger fleet is based at Louisburg. Price per pound delivered ranges from 7- 30 cents.
