On This Day: May 28, 1788, Rev. Rana Cossit, Cape Breton's first permanent Protestant minister, his wife and their seven children move into their new home in Sydney. In the spring of 1785, Rev. Cossit was sent here from New Hampshire by the society for the Propagation of the Gospel, which was relocating its ministers. Rev. Cossit becomes involved in bitter local political conflicts until he leaves Sydney in 1800.
His house, on Charlotte Street, is among the oldest in Sydney, just a few months younger than the Jost House across the street. A property of the Nova Scotia Museum, it is operated by the Old Sydney Society. July 11, 1983, it becomes protected under the Nova Scotia Heritage Properties Act.
