Last week we held our 31st annual Empty Bowls fundraiser in support of Anishnawbe Health Foundation (AHF) (), a registered charity that works with generous donors to help improve the health and wellness of Toronto’s Indigenous community. We raised over $18,000!

Thank you to all the chefs, artists, pottery guilds, ceramics schools, and ticket buyers who made the event such a huge success. We couldn’t have done it without your contributions.

We’d also like to offer a special thank you to the Shop artists who worked so hard to create the most beautiful bowls and deliver them to the Museum in time for the event. You truly outdid yourselves and made Empty Bowls 2025 incredibly special.

Get to know Gardiner Shop artist Makiko Hicher ()! ✨

Makiko recently shared insights into her process and inspirations, revealing the poetry behind her evocative ceramic work.

GS: What ideas inspire your work?

Makiko Hicher: My pieces are inspired by the idea of a work of art that, perhaps after a shipwreck, sinks to the bottom of the sea, waiting for centuries, gradually covered by algae and shellfish, taking on the colours of the waters surrounding it. My work is about both the sadness and poetry of lost objects, forsaken by all, on which time slowly leaves its marks.

GS: What aspect of working with clay do you enjoy most?

MH: I really enjoy working with the potter’s wheel, and I am very interested in exploring the shapes of the pieces.
