๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒŸJoin us for our opening reception this Saturday 6-10pm! ๐ŸŽŠ๐Ÿงต

The Lost & Found will be open May 30 for the opening reception of material disobedience, Openworkโ€™s exhibition! Grab some refreshments by and meet the amazing artists โ€” Thรฉo Bignon (), Molly JF Caldwell (), Lux Gow-Habrich (.sparkledust) and Hea R. Kim ().

Rhinestones, beads, crystals, embroidery, textiles, and ceramics have all been variously perceived as symbols of โ€œexcessiveโ€ cultures or lifestyles, an association that has served to reinforce creative hierarchies and trivialize marginalized identities. From sequined embroideries that immortalize gay cruising spots, tongue-in-cheek textiles exalting vilified reality stars, fantastical recreations of ancient Chinese accessories, and surreal ceramic creatures crusted in pom-poms and beads, material disobedience challenges the stigma of "excess" and translates it into creative inspiration and radically decadent possibilities. Curated by Madeline Collins ().

This exhibition and programming is a part of Openwork, an artist-led intitative by TLAF Collective () to encourage new voices, diversity, and critical engagement in the field of experimental craft and material-based practice. material disobedience is generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council. The panel discussion is hosted by Harbourfront Centre, and we would like to acknowledge the incredible support of artverb* ()

Molly JF Caldwell (she/her) is a Calgary-based artist, writer, and cultural worker whose practice is rooted in autoThรฉory, textiles, and material-based inquiry. A 2017 graduate of Alberta University of the Arts, she explores Japanese-Canadian identity, feminist craft traditions, and the politics of making through a multidisciplinary approach. Her work examines how textiles operate as both archives and sites of resistance, foregrounding slow-making methodologies and embodied knowledge. Caldwell was named to the 2025 Sobey Art Award longlist and has exhibited and published across the country, with recent projects at The Esker Foundation, The New Gallery, and Neutral Ground.

In this panel discussion, Thรฉo Bignon , Molly JF Caldwell , Hea R. Kim , Lux Gow-Habrich .sparkledust, and curator Madeline Collins will consider craft as a liberatory tool for addressing social, economic, political and/or cultural harms, while also being deeply embedded in personal histories and self-expressions for q***r, femme, and racialized artists. The artists will discuss experimental craftโ€™s ability to challenge traditional hierarchies (in both life and art) and as a means of repairing relations with trivialized or undervalued labour, knowledge, and ways of making. See you there!

Graciously supported by the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Lux Gow-Habrich (ๆ˜Ÿๅฐ˜), an interdisciplinary artist and support worker, channels the intimate histories and rich material teachings of ceramics and textiles to create sculpture and installation art at the intersections of embodiment, identity, care practices, and processes of rupture and repair. Her interest in ritual, commemoration, and the body as archive weaves together diasporic experiences of loss and belonging to unearth unspoken legacies of disabled, q***r grief, and empowerment.

Bignonโ€™s practice of embroidering and beading meaningful locations in q***r life to mark the relationship between place and the crafting of q***r identity. Participants are encouraged to bring an image of or an object from a place that is important to them and their identity โ€” this could be from spaces of friendship, found family, sexual liberation, emotional release, transition, and many more. Following a short discussion of his work, Bignon will lead participants through the process of sketching, embroidering, and beading a vignette onto a small circle of cloth as a way of reflecting on our everyday, unconscious place-making practices.

The Lost & Found (located just a few doors down) will be open for an exclusive preview of the exhibition, so you can see Bignon's works in person and get inspired to create your own.

๐ŸŒœJulie Moon is a Toronto based ceramic artist. Her dedication to her practice is motivated by material and process. The universality and tactile qualities of working with clay offers a refreshing contrast to our screen-dominated lives. The surface of her sculpture and vessel works is a canvas for expressing individualism and diversity. Julie often draws from popular culture, using an accessible visual language that resonates with broad audiences. Her work pays homage to the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 70โ€™s and 80โ€™s, while embracing the inclusive spirit of the 1960โ€™s and 70โ€™s counterculture movement. Simultaneously, Julieโ€™s admiration for the bold and clear aesthetics of modernism and post-modernism, is also very apparent.
