Gray Hoye Mills (1929–2009) was a Canadian multidisciplinary artist whose practice moved fluidly between painting and sculpture. Working across materials such as watercolour, acrylic, wood, aluminum, and steel, Mills developed a body of work defined by disciplined material inquiry.
The featured triptych, “Triptych Inquiry” (2005) executed in graffito and oil patina on mild steel, is a key example of Mills’ late exploration of surface, oxidation, and structure, where the boundaries between painting and sculpture begin to dissolve.
A selection of works from the Estate of Gray Hoye Mills will be offered at auction March 31, 2026. Read our contextual essay and view the full catalogue at the link in our bio.
