Canvas Gallery

Canvas Gallery Canvas is now known as the alternative to the traditional gallery. Of course our friendly staff is always there to help too.
(1)

Canvas Gallery is a vibrant visual arts venue with a constantly changing inventory of about 1,200 original works by more than 120 established and emerging Canadian artists. Opened in late October of 2003 by husband and wife Mark Hunter & Megan Less, the gallery was their answer to what they felt was a need for accessible original art in the Toronto area. We offer an impressive selection and variet

y of original pieces to first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike. Paintings, photography, encaustic & mixed media pieces as well as works on paper are presented in a casual non-intimidating atmosphere where customers are encouraged to flip through the work at their own pace. All works are available to be taken on approval to try at home before purchasing.

Grace Afonso dropped by on Sunday afternoon with four spectacular new large-scale works before heading off on her summer travels.
We’ve always admired Grace’s ability to distill a landscape down to its essence. An observant traveller at heart, she’s known for exploring back roads and quiet communities with sketchbook in hand, ready to pull over at a moment’s notice when something catches her eye. The observations happen on location—the magic of colour comes later in the studio, where these memories are transformed into joyful, vibrant compositions.
This latest collection includes one piece inspired by Bancroft, Ontario, while the other three emerged from a road trip through Quebec along the St. Lawrence River. White houses, winding roads, rolling hills, and towering trees are simplified into bold shapes and luminous colour fields that feel both familiar and wonderfully imagined.
We’re testing out a new phrase for these ones: colour bombs. 💥🎨 And honestly, it fits.
The colours are vibrant, the compositions are playful, and the paintings seem to radiate happiness. Photographs do a decent job, but in person they are absolutely stunning.
Please enjoy the paintings, the in situ images, and a few photos of Grace with her newest works. We feel incredibly fortunate to have these beauties at Canvas before they begin their next journey. ❤️

One of our favourites — and one of yours.
Longtime Canvas artist Donna Andreychuk has brought us six beautiful new paintings from her studio in Delaware, Ontario. Represented by Canvas since 2007, Donna has become one of our most collected and successful artists, and it’s easy to see why.
Drawing inspiration from the Canadian landscape, Donna creates richly layered paintings filled with movement, colour, and light. These new works range from lush forest interiors and dreamy waterside scenes to vibrant florals and expressive abstracted landscapes. Every brushstroke feels alive.
Photos can only tell part of the story. The texture, energy, and depth of these paintings need to be experienced in person.
Enjoy the new works and the in situ images — and if you’ve collected a Donna before, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.

We were delighted to welcome longtime Canvas artist Susan Gale back to the gallery this week with two striking new large-scale urban landscapes, each painted in acrylic on panel.
Originally from Newfoundland and now firmly rooted in Toronto, Susan has spent years observing and interpreting the city through her unmistakable visual language. Her paintings transform familiar streets into vibrant experiences, capturing not just what Toronto looks like, but what it feels like to move through it.
These newest works depict two beloved West Toronto intersections:
✨ Dundas & Gladstone — 40 x 60 inches
✨ Dundas & Brock — 36 x 60 inches
Rendered in Susan’s signature mosaic-like brushwork, luminous colour palette, and richly textured surfaces, these paintings celebrate the rhythm of city life. Streetcars glide through pools of afternoon light, bicycles wait patiently along the sidewalk, and everyday moments become something almost cinematic. The familiar urban landscape is softened, energized, and reimagined through layers of colour and texture that invite viewers to linger a little longer.
What makes Susan’s work so compelling is her ability to find beauty in the ordinary. These are streets many Torontonians pass every day, yet through her eyes they become vibrant portraits of a city in constant motion.
We especially love seeing these impressive pieces in situ—the scale, texture, and light truly come alive.
Enjoy the paintings, the details, and the views of Toronto we know so well, seen through the unique perspective of Susan Gale.

Kitchener Ontario based artist Sherry Czekus dropped off seven new works this week — and it was so good to see her in the gallery… it’s been a minute.
These feel like quiet observations of everyday life… those in-between moments we all pass through without really noticing. Waiting, walking, crossing paths, standing still — and somehow she turns it all into something worth lingering on.
There’s a calm confidence in these new pieces. Simplified forms, soft palettes, and all that open space — nothing feels forced. Just small gestures, subtle colour shifts, and compositions that let you breathe.
We especially love the shift in perspective — some from above, some from within the crowd — like you’re both part of it and watching it at the same time.
They’re understated, a little poetic, and incredibly current… little snapshots of how we move through the world right now.
Take a closer look — the details, the spacing, the rhythm of it all. These ones really grow on you.

Tracy Bultje dropped off three new works this morning… and honestly — these stop you in your tracks.
The colour is next level. Bold, saturated, unapologetic. Lush greens, electric blues, hits of orange and coral — all layered into these wild, immersive landscapes that feel like they’re moving.
There’s this beautiful tension in them… reflections and distortions, calm water and chaotic foliage, light dancing through deeper, moodier passages. You don’t just look at these — you kind of fall into them.
Tracy’s work always lives somewhere between the natural and something more intuitive — where things don’t need to be perfectly defined to make complete sense.
And the longer you spend with them, the more they settle… everything finding its place.
Take a look through the. images  — these ones are as good as it gets. They will be up on our site tomorrow with in situs. DM us if you’re interested… and I know you are)

Rina Gottesman stopped by with three new works and… wow. These ones feel like summer finally showing up.
A stunning 40 x 60 anchors the group — layered, atmospheric, and full of movement — with two 48 x 36 abstract florals that bring a softer, more lyrical energy. Think washes of turquoise, hits of magenta, and those loose, expressive lines that seem to wander and find their way all at once.
There’s something really special in how these pieces balance structure and spontaneity — bold, but never heavy. The textures pull you in, the colour keeps you there.
They photograph beautifully… but in person, they absolutely glow.
Take a look at the details, the layers, the in situ moments — and imagine living with one of these.

We’ve just received 5 new incredible pieces from Kitchener-based Chilean-Canadian artist Maca Suazo.
There’s something quietly powerful happening in this body of work.
Each piece begins with a line—a fragment of poetry, a lyric, a truth that feels both deeply personal and universally understood. But these aren’t just paintings of words. They’re paintings about what those words awaken.
From Rumi’s reminder that “this turning toward what you deeply love saves you,” to Mary Oliver’s tender permission to “let the soft animal of your body love what it loves,” Maca builds spaces where language and feeling blur into something visual, intuitive, and lived-in.
There’s a sense of searching here—of holding onto what matters. Of finding peace slowly, as W. B. Yeats once wrote. Of seeking out what is precious, as Jess Housty urges. And even a quiet optimism woven through it all, echoing Silvio Rodríguez: hoy sé que no hay nada imposible.
These works feel like pages you don’t just read—you return to.
Please enjoy the most incredible titles ever… truly worth the read. And of course, take a look at the in situs and images.

Three new works by Sharon Barr arrived this morning—just in time for Victoria Day weekend and a stretch of long-awaited warm weather. Sharon has been with Canvas since 2006, and her work continues to evolve in ways that feel both grounded and unexpected. Megan still talks about visits to her Toronto Beaches studio—spaces filled with light, colour, and that unmistakable sense of creative momentum.
These new pieces lean into restraint. Soft blues, greys, and airy whites build the foundation, while small flashes of colour surface and disappear. Marks feel instinctive—scraped, layered, held back, then released.
They don’t announce themselves. They unfold.
Somewhere between landscape and memory, structure and drift—these are paintings that reward time and attention.
A beautiful, quiet start to the weekend. Please enjoy the images and in situs.
