December 1 is World AIDS Day. The first World AIDS Day took place in 1988, providing a platform to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and honor the lives affected by the epidemic. Also known as Day With(out)Art, today we celebrate the lives and achievements of lost friends, colleagues, and artists.

Pictured above: General Idea, AIDS, 1987. General Idea created this logo to be an large-scale publicity campaign meant to raise awareness and remove the stigma surrounding AIDS. They created numerous versions of the logo which appeared as paintings, posters, wallpapers, multiples, and public sculptures internationally.

The Clichettes: Lips, Wigs, and Politics
💫
Published on the occasion of the exhibition The Clichettes: Lips, Wigs, and Politics held at the McMaster Museum of Art (M(M)A) in Hamilton, Ontario in 2024. With essays by Ivana Dizdar, Marni Jackson, John Greyson, Alexandra Schwartz, Mark Kingwell, rl Goldberg, Lillian Allen, and Wanda Nanibush.

Bridging theatre, lip-sync, dance, drag, costume, and comedy, the Canadian artist trio The Clichettes (Louise Garfield, Janice Hladki, and Johanna Householder) developed a groundbreaking practice at the crossroads of performance art and feminist satire. In hundreds of performances and four full-length plays between 1978 and 1993, the artists adopted dozens of personas–from love-sick girl to metalhead to femme fatale–as they scrutinized the tropes of femininity and masculinity. Their sources and reference points included Greek mythology, art history, B movies, science fiction, 1960s fashion, Motown, and hard rock. Their characters were just as eclectic: Medusa, a quail hunter, a beanbag chair, a turtle, Fidel Castro. Unequivocally experimental, playful, and humorous, The Clichettes’ work was–above all–political, exposing the structures that define power under patriarchy. Published on occasion of the group’s first retrospective, this fully-illustrated catalogue presents The Clichettes’ many dynamic collaborations with artists, writers, designers, and directors and celebrates their radical vision for a better world.

Happening next week at !

Together with artist AA Bronson and Gareth Long, PUBLICS co-curates the first exhibition to focus upon the entangled relationship between AA Bronson, the artist group General Idea’s publishing and distribution practice, and one of their most enduring artworks: Art Metropole. The exhibition comprises artworks, publications, rare editions, archival material, and a selection of General Idea films from the 1970s-80s. PUBLICS will also host a satellite pop-up of Art Metropole’s bookstore throughout the exhibition.

To celebrate this event, PUBLICS’ next Center for Curatorial Thinking pioneering guest is artist AA Bronson (), who on November 29th at 5:30pm will join artist Gareth Long () for a PUBLICS talk to open the show.

Established in 1974, Art Metropole operates the oldest and longest-running artist-run centre that publishes, promotes, exhibits, archives, and distributes artists’ books, multiples, and related media in the world. The exhibition design centres around an installation artwork by Long providing a space for looking, reading and lounging at PUBLICS Library in Helsinki.

AA Bronson was one of the founding members of artist group General Idea, together with Felix Partz , and Jorge Zontal. The three met in Toronto in 1969, drawn to the city’s blossoming countercultural scene. General Idea started as an anonymous group before crystallising into an intentional three-part group.

Art Metropole was founded by General Idea as a division of Art-Official Inc. Its founding mission was to facilitate and document collaboration and exchange of ideas between artists, and served as the non-profit publisher of General Idea’s FILE Megazine. Art Metropole was conceived as a related artist-run centre and collection agency devoted to the documentation, archiving and distribution of "all the images".
