Big news from the road ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆโœจ

Weโ€™re thrilled to share that our CEO, Dr. Melissa Karmen Lee, has been selected to participate in the 2026 Governor Generalโ€™s Canadian Leadership Conference (GGCLC)! ๐ŸŽ‰

This year, 250 leaders from across the country will travel coast to coast through immersive study tours, exploring the challenges, opportunities, and ideas shaping Canadaโ€™s future โ€” while building connections across sectors, communities, and regions.

As CEO of the Chinese Canadian Museum, Melissa joins the conference alongside leaders from business, government, arts, academia, Indigenous communities, media, and civil society to help imagine what the next chapter of Canada can look like.

From Vancouver Chinatown to communities across the country, weโ€™re proud to see Chinese Canadian stories and cultural leadership represented on a national stage.
Congratulations to Melissa and all of the 2026 GGCLC participants! ๐Ÿ‘

A major investment in the future of the Chinese Canadian Museum ๐Ÿ™Œ

Weโ€™re thrilled to share that the Government of Canada has announced funding totalling more than $1.4 million in support of the Chinese Canadian Museum and our ongoing work to preserve, share, and celebrate Chinese Canadian history and heritage.

This support, provided through the Department of Canadian Heritage, will help advance several important areas of work โ€” including the final phase of upgrades to our permanent home in the historic Wing Sang Building, the national tour of "The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act", new public programming connected to our upcoming exhibition "MOMENTUM: Power and Identity in Sports", and student employment opportunities in the heritage sector that provide hands-on, real-world experience in museum and cultural work.

These investments will strengthen our ability to advance research, infrastructure, education, and public programming, bring Chinese Canadian stories to communities across the country, and create more opportunities for learning, dialogue, and connection.

We are deeply grateful to the Government of Canada for this support and for recognizing the important role museums play in preserving history and shaping our shared future.

What an incredible journey of photographs and teapots โœจ Thank you to everyone who visited our exhibitions "Montrรฉal Chinois: The Lost Decades" and "Collectorโ€™s Corner: Roger Lee" over the past months, and for joining us one last time this past weekend before it closed. Weโ€™ve loved seeing these stories and pieces resonate with so many visitors.

Now on view at Sidney Museum: "A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia" โ€” our award-winning exhibition, developed in partnership with Museum of Vancouver and University of British Columbia.

Through food and restaurant culture, the exhibition traces both historical and contemporary Chinese Canadian experiences across B.C., with stories of separation, solidarity, and home.

Last week, we were honoured to hear Joe Eng share his family's history at Beacon Cafe โ€” Sidney's oldest Chinese restaurant.

Thanks to Sidney Museum for opening their space to this work, and for the warm reception from the Vancouver Island community.

On view until November 15, 2026.

A landmark moment for British Columbia ๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Chinese Canadian Museum board member, Dr. Imogene Lim ๐Ÿ†

We're proud to celebrate Dr. Imogene Lim on receiving the Outstanding Award in the Professional Achievement: Lifetime Achievement category at the 2026 Heritage BC Awards.

Over decades, her work has reshaped how Chinese Canadian history is understood and shared across the province. Through exhibitions like "Bleached by the Sun: Perspectives on Chinatown" and "Dishing Up Memories: Eating Chinese in BC", she has brought forward stories that were too often overlooked โ€” and helped make them central to B.C.โ€™s cultural narrative.

As an anthropologist, educator, and community leader, Dr. Lim has changed not just what we know about history, but how we value it. Her work continues to shape the future of heritage in British Columbia. We were honoured to nominate her.

Thank you to Heritage BC for recognizing this incredible contribution โ€” and to everyone working to preserve and share the collective histories of Chinese Canadians.

Now open at Manitoba Museum! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

On May 1, "The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act" opened in Winnipeg โ€” a powerful adaptation of our award-winning landmark exhibition first presented in Vancouver.

Timed with Asian Heritage Month, this travelling exhibition brings these histories closer to home, connecting national narratives to local communities.

We were honoured to hear Thomas Rempel-Ong share his family's multigenerational story โ€” featured in the Manitoba edition through The Ong Family Collection โ€” alongside a special book talk by author and guest curator Catherine Clement.

Thank you to Dr. Amelia Fay, Dr. Roland Sawatzky, and the Manitoba Museum team for bringing these stories to a new audience โ€” and to the Winnipeg community, thank you for coming out to celebrate with us.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage to the Chinese Canadian Museum and for supporting the tour of "The Paper Trail" across the country. We also thank the David and Dorothy Lam Foundation, our Community Legacy & Learning Initiative Partner, for their support.

"The Paper Trail" will be on view at the Manitoba Museum until April 2027.
