Situated on the unceded, ancestral and traditional lands of the xwmə0–kwəy’əm (Musqueam), the Hatch Art Gallery aims to stimulate the exchange of art and ideas between artists, students and the public. Through dynamic exhibitions and programming, the Hatch seeks to present innovative projects on critical subjects relevant to larger discourses in contemporary art, visual culture and theory. In addi

tion to biweekly exhibitions, the Hatch also maintains and displays the AMS Permanent Collection, an impressive assortment of Canadian art that provides a cross section of artistic growth and development in Canada since 1945. The Hatch’s exhibition schedule is also supplemented by a variety of special events and projects throughout the year, including collaborations, workshops, performances, and the annual Visual Arts Student Association exhibition. The Hatch Art Gallery is supported by the UBC Alma Mater Society.

From Her Shoulders by Anvit Goyal

Medium: Cotton and wool

“This jacket is made from a shawl that belonged to my mother and is about 50 years old. In Hinduism, the concept that God resides within each human being is a foundational belief, often summarized by the idea that the individual soul (Atman) is a part of or identical to the Supreme Cosmic Reality (Brahman). For me, this jacket carries that idea in a very real way.
My mother is a part of me, and through this piece, she continues to stay with me.”

Join us on April 3rd for the opening reception of “Heirloom: Art as Intergenerational Transmission” ✨

The exhibition seeks to display and celebrate art forms that have been historically overlooked and undervalued; art that has taken place in the home and passed down amongst families and generations. This includes a variety of mediums, art which borders the line between creative expression and domestic labour. These art forms were typically practiced by marginalized groups, such as women in the home or imported handiwork by people of colour, and consumed by a privileged class, leading to systemic and societal barriers delegitimizing the value of this work. Now, they act as resistance through intergenerational teachings, preserving hundreds of years of culture and history as they are passed down to the new generation.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS (link in bio):
The Hatch Art Gallery is excited to announce our final exhibition of the winter term, “Heirloom: Art as Intergenerational Transmission.”

We invite the UBC community to submit their work, pieces that embody passed-down generational teachings, to be displayed at the Hatch Art Gallery in the AMS Nest in April 2025. All interpretations and forms of artistic mediums are encouraged to apply.
