Recent delivery of new paintings by AR&S artist Heather Craig ✨

Heather’s practice engages the culture that we inhabit, with an emphasis on understanding loss. This drive arises from many years of experience as a nurse, and from personal experience. For her, life’s biggest test is to manage the losses that come our way, and for that reason her work often deals with the process of grief. At the same time, she has an appreciation of the joyful and whimsical aspects of life. The materiality of paint is inextricably bound with meaning in her work. She takes colours and simple signs, and paints, allowing her work to take on a presence and authority of its own.

The large painting has rented, however the other two paintings are currently available for rent or purchase, see link in bio for more.

Jean Paul Langlois with a painting he completed during a Kapishkum Metis Gathering at the Banff Centre.

Jean Paul is known for his signature style using ultra-saturated colours and references to art history and cinema tropes. His work is an examination of his own life, through the reinterpretation of family stories using characters and motifs from the pop culture he was weaned on.

Pictured: 1974 Valiant With a Slant 6, acrylic on canvas, 18” x 24”. Available to rent or purchase, see link in bio for details.

Mary-Jean Butler with new work for the program.

Mary-Jean Butler's paintings reflect the rugged landscape of the mountains and coastline of the Pacific Northwest. Her characteristic colour palette and bold composition have been influenced by her education in both Fine Art + Graphic Design. A love of nature is evident in her work as she explores the texture and saturation of oil paint to interpret the varying moods of the coastal landscape.

Featured Artist Jean Huang’s figurative oil paintings are a quiet meditation on growth and identity. Jean was born in Taiwan and trained at Boston’s SMFA at Tufts University. She transitioned into a career in early childhood education after the birth of her daughter. That lived experience shapes her practice, where painting meets developmental psychology. In her ongoing series, “A Small Play,” she captures fleeting formative moments with a gaze that is both maternal and insightful.

“A Small Play” is on view in the showroom until June 5th. Learn more via link in bio or visit our showroom on the ground floor Annex of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
