In the mid-1960s, Vancouver saw significant shifts in contemporary art away from gestural abstraction towards more non-organic forms of expression that could be described as geometric, hard edge, minimal and even Pop Art. The artwork in this exhibition has been selected from artists who played a major role in propagating this new modern art.

Chernoff Fine Art is pleased to announce Because I Said So, an exhibition of work by Vancouver artist and musician Paul Hyde. Paul, with no formal artistic training, has been working in collage for over 20 years, perfecting his techniques with resin, rhinestones and found imagery. He searches for collage materials in magazines and books, collecting, then sifting through the images until inspiration strikes.

Paul Hyde was born in Yorkshire, England. He is a Juno award-winning singer/songwriter, best known for his work as lead singer and lyricist with eighties bands Payola$ and Rock & Hyde.
Hyde, who lives in Vancouver, is no longer touring in a band, now describes himself as a full time visual artist who makes the occasional record. Most day you can find him happily locked away in his studio, creating new works.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
After 20 years of collage I’m still having fun with anthropomorphism. I have recently been exploring surrealist themes and the dark history of the church in Canada.
