June is Indigenous History Month! The MOV has multiple exhibitions where you can learn more about Indigenous history with a focus on our host nations, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations:
- Unity Indigenous Plant Garden: A Living Exhibition showcases indigenous plants and their traditional uses alongside their names in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Skwxwú7mesh snichim.
- That Which Sustains Us explores different traditions in the Vancouver area including traditional ecological knowledge, deforestation and urbanization and the return to sustainable land use practices.
- c̓əsnaʔəm: The City Before the City aims to generate discussions about heritage and Indigenous history, and to raise awareness of the significance of c̓əsnaʔəm for the Musqueam people and for the City of Vancouver.
- The Work of Repair: Redress & Repatriation at the Museum of Vancouver (which is only on view until June 28!) explores how MOV is working to move beyond its history as a colonial institution through repatriation and redress.

An evolving photo exhibition and archive of photos taken by Foncie Pulice. Explore the current collection and add to it by submitting your photos. We encourage you to include heart-felt personal stories of life, death, trauma and joy, that when experienced together tell a larger historic story of life in British Columbia from the 1930s to the end of the 70s. There is cultural richness in Foncie’s photos and in the history they reveal in those flash moments on Granville Street in downtown Vancouver – over the course of almost half a century.

We are so very excited for visitors to come and see our latest exhibition, Becoming: The Art of Gu Xiong starting tomorrow, May 28 and through February 7, 2027.

The exhibition traces the evolution of Gu Xiong’s artistic practice and the major influences that defined it. An internationally recognized multidisciplinary artist, Gu works across mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, and site-specific installations. His work redefines how we understand migration, hybridity, and globalization.

Highlights include Enclosures (1989-2026), an installation not seen since the 1989 China/Avant-Garde Exhibition; the Crushed Cans painting and silkscreen print series (1991-93), an embodiment of Gu’s experience with culture shock; and Yellow Cargo (2016-26) a large-scale installation that explores globalization through the lens of migrant workers in Canada.
