We’re piloting something new this September: The Fossil Frontier, a weekend expedition through the Wapiti and Gates formations, with camping at Pipestone Creek, a night near the northern Rockies at the Aseniwuche Pimatisiwin Cultural Centre, guided fossil sites, and time in our collections lab.

As our pilot participant, you’ll experience the full weekend and help us evaluate and refine The Fossil Frontier before we open it to future guests.

We’re looking for candid, thoughtful feedback on activities, accommodations, pacing, logistics, and the overall experience, what works, what doesn’t, and how we can make it better. Your input will directly shape the future visitor experience.

You might be our person if you:
✔ Love spending time outside in nature
✔ Are drawn to fossils and dinosaurs
✔ Are 18+
✔ Can get yourself to the museum (we are unable to cover travel to the museum)

It's Fossil Friday!

This large hadrosaur fossil footprint is a natural cast of the print a dinosaur left about 75 million years ago. Footprints come in two types, either a mold or a natural cast.

If you find the footprint indentation in the rock it is a mold of the print. Sometime the rock that infills the print is harder than the rock that created the print and if that is the case you can find prints like this one where it created a natural cast which pushed out from the rock.

Step into fall with us. 🍂 September is a full one at the museum, and there's something for almost everyone.

We are back at the Home Education Showcase on the 10th at Muskoseepi Park from 11:30-3pm, then we are heading to GrandeCon on the 12th–13th, because dinosaurs have always belonged on a con floor!

Back on-site, the Bonebed Tour runs its final tours of the season from September 16–19 and 23–26, a guided walk to the Pipestone Creek Bonebed, one of the densest dinosaur fossil sites on Earth. Tours start at 1:30pm, sign up online or at the museum.

We've also refreshed one of our children’s space, with more hands-on activities just for our smallest explorers. Piece together a dinosaur skeleton right on the floor, get your hands on a sensory T-rex wall built to touch, twist, and explore, and let loose on our chalk wall.

On September 30, we pause to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Alberta Day at the museum did not disappoint. 🦕🎉

Thank you to the County of Grande Prairie No. 1 for an amazing afternoon at the museum! There was face painting, mini golf, Bonebed tours and a fantastic bbq!

Thank you to everyone who came out, and to the County team who made it happen. We're already looking forward to next time. 🦖
