Welcoming you all to attend next week's celebration of the incredible students featured in Asterism, May 25th at 5:30. Awards ceremony at 6:30.

Department Chair Amanda Beattie writes, "The graduating Visual Arts students of 2026 embody the asterism in both the astronomical and literary sense. They are a strong and united collective made of individual, bright stars, recognizable for their talent and drive. They force us to pause, to look, to think. They are the shift in the passage – they stand out and demand attention. With their creativity, they control the narrative. With their passion, they light up the sky."

What is art for? More than 80 artworks created in the pandemic summer of 2020 by artists worldwide respond to this question, posed by Montreal artist and educator Kathleen Vaughan. Employing her kits of special papers, textiles, and embroidery floss, collaborators created material and digital works revealing their fears and hopes for art and us all. Now, almost 6 years later during our present moment of upheaval, strife, uncertainty, and fear, Vaughan’s display in the gallery re-asks the question, inviting visitors to take to the materials in the gallery’s maker space to offer their own answer to this question, however it resonates.

Kathleen Vaughan (MFA, PhD) is an artist, writer, and Professor of Art Education at Concordia University. Her own artwork uses multiple digital and analogue media with a strong textile inflection, complemented by storytelling, and is oriented to environmental and social justice. akaredhanded.com | re-imagine.ca

Last days to see Kim Vose Jones’ solo exhibition, LifeBoat: An Unnatural History. Ends this Friday!

LifeBoat: An Unnatural History presents viewers with allegorical depictions of transitional precariousness and migratory flight. Inspired by natural history museum displays as well as historical and current events, it invokes complex and overlapping social, political, ethical, and cultural issues.

The project began, in part, while she researched her family genealogy and discovered an ancestor, Anne Dodin, who came to Québec in 1669 along with dozens of other young French girls.
