Mark your calendars! 🧵

In "Facing Material", Meera Sethi asks us to consider what it means to make contact with material as a carrier of history, memory, place, grief, and resilience.

Across a range of media, Sethi’s methodology of deep investigation into cloth takes us from playful surface ornamentation into interrogations that reveal themes of connection, labour, craft, and community.

The exhibition includes soft sculpture installation, paintings, drawings, and the artist’s most recent tape-based Draweaves. Immersing viewers in an intricately constructed and richly patterned world, Sethi’s work reframes textile as a mode and metaphor of communication, focusing our attention toward interlaced narratives.

Monica Tap's large studio paintings celebrate both environmental ecology and the ecology of artists, past and present. 🌱

Employing a collage technique that integrates reproductions of paintings across time periods and styles to create models for her paintings, Tap's final works are rendered as constellations of voices wherein no single perspective is in charge. Juxtaposing multiple times and places, these paintings also embody Tap's critique of the perception and representation of nature as an infinite commodity.

Once, in summer invites viewers to slow down and consider the intertwined histories of art and the environment while reminding us of the restorative potential of the natural world. 🍃

There are only a couple weeks left to visit these works in person - don't miss your chance to visit us in the gallery!

While Monica Tap's larger studio paintings showcase a convergence of temporalities and viewpoints, her plein air paintings are completed on site, in a single session. 🍃

"Once, in summer" features a number of Tap's plein air sketches, arranged as a layered composite of images spanning a decade that has documented both a changing landscape and a changing artist. Tap refers to these sketches as "evidence of looking" or "containers of attention," and for her, they function as an attentional practice of presence and of being with the landscape.

Time-stamped on the back with each piece's location, date, and time of completion, these works mark Tap's experience of specific times and places, acting as artistic time capsules that emphasize duration and the role that time and perception play in painting. 🎨
