Closing tomorrow — On a Bit of Earth Which Had No Name

Bringing together seven emerging international artists, the exhibition explores memory, place, identity, and belonging.

Across painting, drawing, and other material approaches, the works consider how personal histories and collective narratives shape the places we inhabit and the identities we carry—moving between past and present, familiarity and displacement, the tangible and the imagined.

In her recent artist talk during Kunsttage Basel ’26, Morgan Ogilvie reflects on the shifting meaning of an image originally conceived to embody American ideals of liberty and welcome. Once a symbol of national aspiration, Lady Liberty becomes a point of departure for considering how our relationship to institutions and the narratives they convey has changed.

Ogilvie draws a parallel between the image’s life beyond its maker and the power of contemporary social media platforms, where the tools we create increasingly shape our own behaviour. Her painting explores the uncertainty that emerges when our creations take on a life of their own.

In ancient Greece, the Auriga was the charioteer. For Plato, it was reason itself, steering the two horses of the soul.

Alberto Alejandro Rodríguez turns that figure inward, to a more intimate architecture. The sculptures draw on the structures of wardrobes found in a ruined building, recalling what Gaston Bachelard described as “organs of the secret psychological life.” Spaces of concealment become structures of memory, holding what remains unseen.

Opened and fragmented, these interiors exist between opposing states: secrecy and exposure, disintegration and form. Architecture becomes a delicate negotiation between what endures and what disappears.

A culture dispersed, a memory worn thin.

Drawing on her Circassian-Turkish heritage, Selin Nisa Açıkel approaches portraiture as a temporal condition, tracing how memory persists without a fixed centre: partial, fragile, enduring in fragments, in gesture, in what remains.

Z.T. Nguŷen, currently on view in “On a Bit of Earth Which Had No Name”

Constructed from folded letter-size sheets of paper, Nguŷen’s drawings carry migration, secrecy and touch in the creases themselves. The graphite and acrylic figures, set on ominous glowing stages, don’t necessarily tell a story. They sit in an ambiguous space between stasis and change.

Throwback to 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel’s install at SPRING/BREAK Art Show 2023 — one of many NYC fairs we’ve been part of since our Chelsea days. Now cheering on this year’s edition from Basel.

Koji Nakamura (b. 2001, Shimosuwa, Nagano) lives and works in Japan. He graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2025, Intermedia Art. This is his first presentation with 532 Gallery.
He is from Suwa. In that region, great wooden pillars have long been treated as more than timber — objects that hold a presence.

His puppets work from a smaller version of that instinct. Some are stitched from fabric offcuts that might have become a shirt or a dress. A small change of plan, and the cloth becomes a friend instead.
He gathers, cuts, and sews each one by hand. They leave the studio and go to other rooms. Each keeps a little of the scrap it was made from.

Fragments of plasterboard, wood, and wallpaper recovered from a once-distinguished 20th-century building in Havana — now a ruin — become abstract, wall-based sculptures. Glimpsed as if through a portal, they keep traces of a space shaped by time, neglect, and human presence. Detached from their original architecture, the remnants hold both rootlessness and nostalgia.

For Rodríguez, destruction is not only loss. Exposed layers of a ruin can reveal hidden structures, histories, and possibilities. They ask what counts as cultural heritage and how neglected spaces might still be remembered. Auriga sits in that tension between decay and transformation: fragments as vessels for memory, absence, and renewed meaning.

What remains when memory arrives in fragments?

For Açıkel, drawing is a way of tracing that remainder. Both sides of her family are Circassian-Turkish — descendants of a community displaced from the Northwest Caucasus in the 19th century and resettled across the Ottoman Empire. There was no fixed centre and no continuous story. What survived did so through practice: music, food, ritual, and codes of conduct.
The Veil series looks at that gradual thinning of transmission. Faces appear in pieces, recalled rather than observed, held between presence and disappearance. With charcoal, she treats portraiture as a kind of time record — a way of holding traces that last after clear recollection fades.

Shown in On a Bit of Earth Which Had No Name, the works sit with the exhibition’s questions about displaced histories, blended identities, and the quiet residues through which cultures endure.
