Müller-Meylan Lecture: Carla Juaçaba
June 3 – 7 PM
With the support of the Hans and Renée Müller-Meylan Stiftung
Please join us for the first in a series of three lectures with the protagonists of the exhibition and film series ‘Groundwork,’ on view now at the S AM. The third chapter in the series, ‘With an Acre,’ follows architect Carla Juaçaba as she develops minimal pavilions in support of a collective of smallholder coffee farmers fighting extractive agriculture in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this lecture, Juaçaba will reflect on this project within the larger arc of her diverse and poetic body of work.
Since 2000, Carla Juaçaba has developed an independent architecture and research-based practice in Rio de Janeiro, now also active in Europe. Her work encompasses both cultural programs and private commissions. In 2012, the ephemeral Humanidade Pavilion was conceived in collaboration with theater director Bia Lessa and built for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). Since 2019, Juaçaba has been teaching at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, Switzerland, where she was appointed Full Professor in 2023. She received the inaugural ArcVision Women and Architecture Prize in Italy in 2013, as well as the Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award in 2018. Her work and ideas have been featured in numerous international publications and exhibitions. In 2026, she won the competition for the Art Museum Kurpark Bad Ragaz in Switzerland.
