S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum

S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum The S AM Swiss Architecture Museum is the leading institution in the mediation of contemporary architecture in Switzerland.

Centrally located and in the immediate vicinity of numerous other cultural institutions, S AM invigorates and shapes Switzerland's architectural discourse with its programme, and seeks to bridge the gap between professional discourse and the wider public. Being situated in Basel is no coincidence, as the city of Basel has developed to become the centre of Swiss cultural and architectural discourse

. As one of the most important European architectural centres, Basel has an abundance of outstanding classic modernist and contemporary structures. The city's unique location, right on the border with Germany and France, facilitates cross-border connections and international exchange. S AM has specialised in temporary exhibitions. With an average of 4 exhibitions each year, oriented towards the key programme elements 'History and the Present in Switzerland' and 'Learning From...', S AM appeals to professionals (architects, engineers and planners), but also, primarily, to a broad public with an interest in architecture. The exhibitions' content is reflected on and supplemented by means of guided tours, podium discussions, talks, workshops, work presentations, accompanying publications from the S AM series etc. In addition to the exhibitions, S AM also fulfils its function as a specialist platform for exchange and networking.

June 14 – 2 PM

An exhibition and film series produced by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), Montreal

What does it mean to think and do architecture today, in light of social crises and ecological challenges? ‘Groundwork’ addresses this question by investigating contemporary approaches that are rethinking architectural practice. At its center is a series of three new documentary films, which were produced by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal and originally shown there as three separate exhibitions.

Last spots available for a guided tour of the newest building on the Erlenmatt Ost transformation site by Stump & Schibli Architects!

“ASSEMBLE by Vectorworks” is a free monthly event series made possible through the support of our partner, Vectorworks.

In June, we will head to Erlenmatt Ost, on the site of the former Deutsche Bahn freight yard. In 2010, the non-profit Stiftung Habitat acquired three building plots with the aim of developing sustainable and affordable housing. Erlenmatt Ost is currently considered one of the largest energy-sharing communities in Switzerland.

The crowning feature of the perimeter block development is the five-storey building designed by the Basel-based architectural firm Stump & Schibli Architekten. The horseshoe-shaped new building encloses a generously planted inner courtyard, which serves as a connecting element between the buildings and their residents. The range of apartments spans from one-room to five-and-a-half-room flats, as well as live-work studios, in order to encourage the most diverse and socially mixed community possible. The building is expected to be ready for occupancy in spring 2027.

We look forward to your participation!

Müller-Meylan Lecture: Carla Juaçaba
June 3 – 7 PM

With the support of the Hans and Renée Müller-Meylan Stiftung

Please join us for the first in a series of three lectures with the protagonists of the exhibition and film series ‘Groundwork,’ on view now at the S AM. The third chapter in the series, ‘With an Acre,’ follows architect Carla Juaçaba as she develops minimal pavilions in support of a collective of smallholder coffee farmers fighting extractive agriculture in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this lecture, Juaçaba will reflect on this project within the larger arc of her diverse and poetic body of work.

Since 2000, Carla Juaçaba has developed an independent architecture and research-based practice in Rio de Janeiro, now also active in Europe. Her work encompasses both cultural programs and private commissions. In 2012, the ephemeral Humanidade Pavilion was conceived in collaboration with theater director Bia Lessa and built for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). Since 2019, Juaçaba has been teaching at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, Switzerland, where she was appointed Full Professor in 2023. She received the inaugural ArcVision Women and Architecture Prize in Italy in 2013, as well as the Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award in 2018. Her work and ideas have been featured in numerous international publications and exhibitions. In 2026, she won the competition for the Art Museum Kurpark Bad Ragaz in Switzerland.

‘Kulturkompass’ at S AM
Discover 'Groundwork' with a Polaroid camera
May 27 – 3 to 5 PM

For children aged 8 and up

How is architecture created? Who shapes our city? And how do spaces actually change our lives?

As part of the Cultural Compass, we will explore the exhibition Groundwork at the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum together. On a playful tour through the exhibition, we take a closer look at light, shadow, colors, materials, staircases, sightlines, and exciting perspectives. Together we consider: How does architecture influence our everyday lives—and how can people transform spaces?

Afterwards, we go on an exploratory walk with Polaroid cameras around Theaterplatz near Theater Basel. Which places catch our attention? Which details, shapes, or atmospheres do we want to capture? Using instant photos, we collect impressions and develop our own ideas for the spaces of the future.
At the end, we look at the resulting Polaroids together, tell small stories about them, and continue thinking about architecture—as a creative process between people, the city, and the environment.

Guided city tour: A City of Architecture – From the Old Town to the Present
May 17 – 2 PM

The architecture tours are a collaboration between Basel Tourism and the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum.

How does architecture shape the face of a city?

The tour begins at the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum at Theaterplatz, a central hub of Basel’s cultural life. Located betweenthe Kunsthalle, the city theater, and the Elisabethenkirche, this area brings together diverse architectural eras and urban functions. From there, the tour continues to the Stadtcasino Basel, whose extension by Herzog & de Meuron demonstrates how contemporary architecture can be thoughtfully integrated into a historic urban context. The walk then proceeds through Basel’s old town toward the Münsterhügel and the Basel Minster. Along the way, you will encounter buildings from various periods—from postwar modernism to recent renovations and transformations. This guided tour illustrates how historic, modernist, and contemporary architecture intersect in Basel’s cityscape and shape its public spaces. As part of the tour, you will hear from museum experts as they share insights on architecture, urban history, and contemporary urban development.

Last spots available for a guided tour of CoDeck by Kooperative E45!

“ASSEMBLE by Vectorworks” is a free monthly event series made possible through the support of our partner, Vectorworks.

Our next Assemble tour takes us to the «CoDeck» in the Basel harbor:
In Kleinhüningen, a former office building from the 1960s has been transformed into a residental and music-focused building. The result is 28 affordable apartments as well as around 700m2 of music and commercial space for the association tonRaum. The building is rented out by Immobilien Basel-Stadt under a «Plus Lease» model, offering 20% lower rents for tenants who meet income and occupancy criteria.

Since November 2025, all apartments have been successfully rented.
The result is a sustainable, socially mixed building with diverse apartment types. The building was stripped back to its structural shell, retaining the concrete structure and adding durable, ecological materials.

We look forward to your participation!

Lecture and Screening: Filming Architecture as a Process
May 9 - 6 PM

How can documentary films be used to tell and make tangible the stories behind architectural processes? The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal, Canada, has been exploring this question for years through various projects. To mark the opening of ‘Groundwork’, the CCA's latest film project presented as an exhibition at S AM, the curators invite visitors on a journey through selected films to examine the moving image as a curatorial medium.
