La 18e Biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon, “Passer d’un rêve à l’autre”, se tiendra du 19 septembre au 13 décembre 2026, sous le commissariat de Catherine Nichols. Partenaire de cette édition, la Fondation Opale est fière de soutenir les œuvres des sept artistes autochtones australien.ne.s présentées au cœur de la biennale.

The 18th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art, “To pass from one dream to another”, will take place from 19 September to 13 December 2026, curated by Catherine Nichols. As a partner of this edition, Fondation Opale is proud to support the works of seven Indigenous Australian artists featured at the biennale.

👥 Fédérer des artistes autour de filets fantômes ?
Lynnette Griffiths est une artiste collaboratrice du centre d’art Erub Arts, et endosse également le rôle de directrice artistique pour des expositions nationales et internationales. En 2020, elle co-fonde “Ghost Net Collective”, afin de permettre aux ghostnets de participer à une réflexion interculturelle globale.
Le mouvement artistique des ghostnets trouve son origine dans des collaborations entre artistes australiens autochtones et non autochtones, travaillant ensemble pour atteindre des objectifs communs: perpétuer les savoirs indigènes pour la protection des océans tout en célébrant la diversité culturelle de l’île-continent.

👥 Bringing artists together around ghostnets?
Lynnette Griffiths is a collaborating artist at the Erub Arts Centre and also serves as artistic director for national and international exhibitions. In 2020, she co-founded the Ghost Net Collective, enabling ghostnets to become part of a broader intercultural dialogue.
The ghostnet art movement emerged from collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian artists working together towards shared goals: preserving Indigenous knowledge for the protection of the oceans while celebrating the cultural diversity of the island continent.

🐢Transformer une menace en source d’inspiration ?
Lavinia Ketchell est née à Cairns et a grandi sur l’île d’Erub. Elle a d’abord rejoint le collectif Erub Arts pour un soutien à la communication, puis a commencé à créer des œuvres en ghostnets dans le but de transformer ce matériau potentiellement mortel en œuvres porteuses d’un message : sensibiliser à la préservation des océans.
Inspiré.e.s par l’océan et les récifs environnants, il s’agit, pour les artistes d’Erub Arts, à la fois d’un appel à l’action et d’une conceptualisation visuelle de l’équilibre de vie des écosystèmes, aujourd’hui menacés.

🐢Turning a threat into a source of inspiration?
Lavinia Ketchell was born in Cairns and grew up on Erub Island. She first joined the Erub Arts collective in a communications role before beginning to create artworks using ghostnets, transforming this potentially deadly material into pieces that carry a powerful message: raising awareness about ocean conservation.
Inspired by the ocean and the surrounding reefs, Erub Arts artists use their work both as a call to action and as a visual expression of the delicate balance of ecosystems which are now under threat.

Que deviennent les filets de pêche perdus en mer ?
Jimmy Kenny Thaiday est membre du collectif Erub Arts, situé sur l’île éponyme, dans le détroit de Torrès au nord-est de l’Australie. Issu du clan Peiudu, l’un des quatre de l’île, il collabore avec d’autres artistes pour imaginer et créer des œuvres à partir de ghostnets, des filets de pêche abandonnés ou perdus dans les océans. Portés par les courants marins, ces filets finissent par s’agréger pour former de gigantesques nœuds entremêlés à d’autres déchets, et dérivent sur des distances considérables, représentant ainsi un danger pour la faune et la flore où ils se trouvent.

What happens to fishing nets lost at sea?
Jimmy Kenny Thaiday is a member of the Erub Arts collective, based on the island of the same name in the Torres Strait, north-east Australia. A member of the Peiudu clan, one of the island’s four clans, he collaborates with other artists to imagine and create works from ghostnets - abandoned or lost fishing nets drifting through the oceans.
Carried by ocean currents, these nets can accumulate into vast tangled masses mixed with other waste, drifting over considerable distances and posing a serious threat to marine life and ecosystems.

Dernière chance pour visiter l’exposition RACINES ! A l’occasion de ce week-end de finissage, la fondation accueille deux pièce de théâtre en collaboration avec samedi 11 avril. Dimanche 12 avril, la chanteuse .tatin explorera les facettes de la voix humaine pour créer une utopie vocale à fleur de peau.

À travers la peinture, la photographie, le dessin, la sculpture ou encore le film, son travail emprunte de nombreux médiums, mais un même fil relie toutes ses œuvres ; celui du regard qu’elle porte sur la science.

31 cercles de couleurs éclatantes transforment le mur en une constellation textile; chaque pièce est tissée à la main avec des fibres variées par l’artiste américaine Sheila Hicks 🧶 Le titre de l’œuvre, VARMAYANA, évoque un lieu de lumière rayonnante, où chaque cercle semble capter et diffuser sa propre énergie colorée 🌞
L’exposition RACINES ferme bientôt ses portes, ne manquez pas de venir la visiter !

Avez-vous déjà découvert le nouvel espace d’exposition, dédié pour ce premier accrochage à l’artiste Rover Thomas Joolama ?

Artiste des peuples Kukatja et Wangkajunga, Rover Thomas Joolama a d’abord été gardien de bétail et commence à peindre tardivement. Né vers 1926 dans le Grand Désert de Sable en Australie-Occidentale, ses œuvres offrent une lecture profonde du paysage comme une archive spirituelle marquée par les récits du Rêve. À la suite du passage du cyclone Tracy sur la ville de Darwin en 1974, Rover Thomas, profondément marqué par cet évènement et avec l’aide de son oncle Paddy Jaminji, crée ses propres balga (danses et chants cérémoniels), qui deviennent la cérémonie du Gurrir Gurrir.

Its first exhibition is dedicated to Rover Thomas, an artist of the Kukatja and Wangkajunga peoples. He first worked as cattle driver and only began painting later in life. Born around 1926 in the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia, his works offer a profound reading of the landscape as a spiritual archive shaped by the stories of the Dreaming. Following Cyclone Tracy’s impact on the city of Darwin in 1974, Rover Thomas, deeply affected by the event and with the help of his uncle Paddy Jaminji, created his own Balga (ceremonial dances and songs), which became the Gurrir Gurrir ceremony.

En visite à Utopia Art Centre, dans le désert central australien, communauté de l’artiste Emily Kam Kngwarray.
L’Utopia Art Centre, situé sur le Territoire d’Arlparra, au nord-est d’Alice Springs, est un centre d’art à but non lucratif, détenu et géré à 100 % par des artistes aborigènes des communautés Alyawarr et Anmatyerr. Le centre d’art soutient les artistes émergent·e·s et confirmé·e·s, en offrant un espace dédié à l’apprentissage intergénérationnel et à l’expression culturelle pour les communautés installées aux alentours.
C’est dans cette communauté que la famille d’Emily Kam Kngwarray a été consultée pour la réalisation de notre prochaine exposition, qui sera dédiée à son œuvre.

Visiting Utopia Art Centre in Australia’s Central Desert, the community of artist Emily Kam Kngwarray.
The Utopia Art Centre, located on Arlparra Country, northeast of Alice Springs, is a non-profit organisation, wholly owned and managed by artists from the Alyawarr and Anmatyerr Aboriginal community. The Art Centre supports emerging and established artists, providing a space for intergenerational learning and cultural expression for local communities.
It was within this community that Emily Kam Kngwarray’s family was consulted regarding the planning of our upcoming exhibition, which will be dedicated to her work.
